Post subject: Two Remote Desktop Users at the same time ??
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>terminal_services, others (more info?)

Is there any way to let two users use a [Vista Ultimate] desktop machine at
the same time?

Windows Server 2003 allows two concurrent connection through RDP for
administration mode.

Also, the later specification for Smart Display 1.5 (Mira), allowed the
display to use the Windows XP host to run one normal user at the computer
simultaneously with the Smart Display user.

I am looking to be able to use my Vista Ultimate desktop machine in a
similar way. I want to be able to use it normally at the desk with one user
account, and have a laptop connect to it using RDP in another user account.

When I try this I get a screen saying that the only way I can connect would
be by knocking off the other user.

Is there any possible way to do this without using a Windows Server machine
with Terminal Services?

I want to avoid compromising and using the same user account through
something like VNC or TeamViewer.

Cheers

Having given my first response - I stand by it (no supported method) - but I
did state it was possible for Windows XP using a 'hack' and files from the
beta of SP2.

Have you even searched for a solution on your own?

My first search for "concurrent remote desktop Vista" came up with hacks
similar to those for XP - but 'unsupported' and "risky" are still part of
the equation. After all you are replacing system files with those whose
contents - you do not know where they came from.

Yes - it is a server OS.

Third party applications - although there was a hack by which you used a
file from a beta release of SP2 and could remote into the machine
concurrently.

Perhaps with a third party program - but I am unaware of any for Vista at
this time.

True.

Not that has been published as supported.

Again - you'd have to look for some third party application...

No. Server OSes allow multiple remote users, desktop OSes allow only one.

"Two conncurrent user at the same time, one using RDP ??"

No, Smart Display was a Microsoft initiative. It failed because it was too
expensive.

These chosen newsgroups seemed to be the natural place to ask people that
might have had some experience with this.

Thanks, I'll have a look at these. I would guess that the files came from
Windows Server 2003.

Yes - but just because you can ask doesn't mean you shouldn't put in some
effort on your own first... Wink

No idea - they claim to be hacked... The definition of 'hacked' is pretty
broad these days.

Oh really? I never heard of that. Does that patch still work, or did MS
repatch the patch through Windows Update?

I don't know if this is of any use to you but...

With Vista and Virtual PC running XP for example, you can have an RDP
session to the XP system at the same time as an RDP session to the Vista
system. or you can have an RDP session to the virtual system at the same
time as a locally logged on user to the hosting machine. Now that virtual
machine could be running Vista Ultimate (or many other things) instead of
XP. I'm sure that would work just as well as XP; just haven't tried it.
Of course here are restrictions to the virtual machine, but it may suffice
for a lot of requirements.

Just wanted to clarify: The link below and the software "patch" referenced
there is not from Microsoft. All desktop versions of Windows XP and Windows
Vista only support one desktop session, whether that is locally logged on or
over a remoting protocol such as RDP. There is no Windows patch or upgrade
that changes that behavior.

Windows *server* 2003 (all versions) supports two desktop session for
administration purposes. This is also the case for Widnows Server 2008
(=Longhorn Server).
