This is cross posted, I hope that will be acceptable.
This pc runs on XP SP2. OE6 & IE7. Updates downloaded automatically but only
installed when I choose. None outstanding.
I don't know if the problem is with the pc, with XP, OE or IE, the problem
started a few days ago.
Search for a file/folder:
Start > search > find all: Window appears saying 'a file that is required to
run search companion cannot be found. You may need to run setup.
When trying to print an email, I get a pop up saying 'Internet
explorer.script error. An error has occurred in the script on this page'. I
cannot close that pop up page and cannot print the mail. I can copy/paste
text into word and print.
Cannot access restore points. No messages or pop ups, nothing at all.
Cannot open device manager or event viewer. Any attempt brings up a message
about MMC console.
I use both antivirus and firewall s/w. My router settings are quite robust.
This is a family pc and I really don't want to format/re-install everything
unless I really have to.
Any suggestions please?
Is a repair installation of X likely to be of any assistance?
Many thanks. |

Thank you,
have tried your suggestion which brings up the following message:
'LoadLibrary ("ole2323.dll") failed-the specified module coulld not be
found'.
Should I consider
1) reposting with this singular issue?
2) a repair installation of XP?
I really don't want to format/reinstall unless I absolutely have to. I
suspect repair installation would likely culminate in this.

You made at least one typo, Nick. One mo' time...
Start | Run | (type or copy/paste) regsvr32 ole32.dll | OK
(That's OLE32.DLL, not OLE2323.DLL)

Thanks Pa Bear,
I call it an age thing.
A small elfin character I may be. However, I am studious.
I apologise for my typo; which was merely that; a typo in my last post.
I quite faithfully followed (typed, and more than once) your instructions as
shown below, but please scroll down a little way further.
You will see in your message:
>>> Start | Run | (type) regsvr32 ole23.dll | OK
and not
> Start | Run | (type or copy/paste) regsvr32 ole32.dll | OK
as more recently written.
It appears that 3&2 do not equal 2&3 anymore.
Be that as it may.
Previous problems remain yet.
Nick.

Doh! My bad. Did you try OLE32.DLL?
Then again, given the litany of problems in your first post (I was only
replying to one of them)...
Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315
Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

by an expert in such matters, not here.**
If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

If you're sure (which i doubt) you don't have any kind of viruses, or
trojans, then with a XP disc you can issue a SFC /SCANNOW command, to check
every file and library on your computer. Any way if there is no antivirus
problem, it seems some registry corruption. Try the sfc to restore original
files.
Best.
