XP SP3
Recently my pc didn't turn off its powere after WinXP had shut down.
Today even the pc did not get bootup:
The power was on but did not goto sytem BIOS.

Was it the problem of motherboard or the power supply?
Note: the power was on.

it could be the powersupply, but it's best to take it to a good repair shop

Any idea if I can figure that out?

Hello Alan:

Check your power supply voltages if you have a meter. Or replace the
power supply with an exact or better replacement.

Exactly how much (hardware) technical expertise do you have access to?

The very fact that you asked that question suggests that you had better
get someone with technical expertise to look at it for you. A good,
reputable repair shop will be best but don't go to the big box stores
like BestBuy for repairs.

When it didn't turn off the power on shutdown, what did you do next?

Laptop or desktop?

Make and model?

Any beeps?

Beeps mean a lot. One short beep is generally good. No beeps is
probably a bad PS or motherboard or connection. Other beeps need to
be interpreted by manufacturer documentation.

Did you physically unplug/replug the machine from the external power
(if your power comes from a wall).

Did you remove/reinstall the battery if it is a laptop?

Does anything light up - keyboard lights, disk activity, power button,
PS fans running?

Just what methods have you tried?

Whats your favorite animal?

The last time I replaced a PS it took me more time to go pick one up
than it did to replace it!

You could ask the experts in a hardware newsgroup. You're currently posting
in a Windows newsgroup where you won't find many respondents with a strong
background in hardware.

Hi,

I had to press the power button on the front of my desktop case for 5
seconds to turn the power off.
Now it can bootup as usual.
No idea what causes it.

Usually a corrupt driver or a running software task (possibly malware) is
the culprit for this type of problem.
It sounds like the system did not boot because it was already on. You forced
shutdown, and the system then booted (properly??)
when you powered it up.

My situation is:
1) Started from last month the power did not turn off even my XP had shut
down already.
I need to press the power button for 5 seconds to turn the power off.

2) This situation keeps happening to today.

3) From last week, my system sometimes did not go to BIOS after I turn on
the power button, ie the screen is blank.

4) Occassionaly now the system can turn on and boot up.

5) BUT I still need to press the power button for 5 seconds to turn the
power off after XP had successfully shut down.
