Playing DVD on a standard DVD player

I am sure this has been asked and answered many times.but I am still in the
dark

I cannot write a DVD that will play on my standalone DVD player

I will try to set out what I have done

1. I loaded the video form my Panasonic camera using the Panasonic software
MotionDV STUDIO LE for DV. This created Assist_cap0001.avi

2. I erased a DVD+RW which had been used before. (I used Paragon CD/DVD
Recorder)

3. I used Ulead Movie Factory 3.5 Suite Deluxe to edit the .avi file.
The file settings are
Microsoft AVI files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 4:3, 25 fps
Frame-based
Panasonic DV CODEC -- type 2
PCM, 32.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

I combined a few scenes, cut out some bits and added chapters.

4. I then tried to output the file to DVD, choosing
Output disc format: DVD
Recording format was shown as DVD-Video
I selected
"Record to disc"
"Create DVD Folders"
The box "Do not close disc" was NOT ticked
I think that the program chooses the same settings as the input file for the
format. (I am only guessing because the option "Create Video File" is set to
"Same as Project Settings")

This output failed with "Disc not ready". But it wrote the following
AUDIO_TS Empty
ViDEO_TS contents:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VIDEO_01_0.BUP
VIDEO_01_0.IFO
VIDEO_01_0.VOB
VIDEO_01_1.VOB
VIDEO_01_2.VOB
VIDEO_01_3.VOB
VIDEO_01_4.VOB

5. I then used Paragon CD/DVD Recorder to write these folders to the DVD

Result:
This DVD plays fine with Ulead DVD Player or with Windows Media Player
It does NOT play on my stand-alone DVD player

Extra Info.
I have previously created movies on DVD+RW which play on the same DVD
player, so it is not the DVD+RW format which is a problem.
(Of course, although I used the same ULead software, I can't remember what
the settings were and/or whether I had to change any )

A query
Could it be the settings for output, i.e. "Same as Project Settings"?
Should I choose something else. e.g. MPEG files (*.mpg) ?

I have good results when:

1. Using DVD+R and not DVD+RW
2. Using the Windows Movie Maker to load the video from the camcorder
into an AVI file
3. Transcoding it to DVD format (NOT normal MPEG2!) with TmpgEnc
4. Using TMPGEnc DVD Author - or IfoEdit - to make the DVD
(TMPGEnc DVD Author also burns; however if I have used IfoEdit, for
burning I use UltraIso).
