P4 upgrade

This is not a Windows problem.

Your best source for information is on the Dell support forums.
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/ (find the one appropriate to your
model)

Do some searching before asking the question - it's likely been asked and
answered numerous times before. If you do post the question, be sure to
state the model number and as much other pertinent info as you can. There
are a lot of knowledgeable, helpful folks on those forums.

Ok. From the DeLL homepage I was able to get the following information.
CPU = Part# C1427 PROCESSOR, 80532, 2.26, 512K, 533, SOCKET N, DECISION
ONE
Motherboard = Part# H1639 CARD (CIRCUIT), PLANAR (MOTHERBOARD), MIDPLANE,
PWS360, AUDIO/NIC

Please help me make heads and tails of this. I have lost my manual and
cannot find any .pdf files that you refered to.

Youre current P4 is on the low side of speed & cache,the 478 P4 can go as
fast as 3.4 with 1mb of cache instead of the 512 you now run.Also,at that
current speed not all run hyperthreading,if yours doesnt,that would give a
big improvement..1st,download intels processor id utility,& hyperthreading
check utility,both a processor software,intel/downloads.Also,go to chipset
software,download the chipset id utility if not sure what you have,that
determines
the speed of the P4 you can/could upgrade to.

I know that Intel P4 come in Socket 478 and 775 and are not
interchangeable. Never heard of a Socket N.

Probably there is no better CPU upgrade that will provide
any real improvement to your computer. You most likely have
some version of the Intel 478 with a 533 MHz FSB, the
fastest 478 CPU that you can get is probably a 2.8 GHz and
will show you very little improvement.

Your speed is determined by the FSB which controls disk
access speeds and the CPU which does the computations.

To get more speed increase your RAM to 1 GB or more and get
the fastest graphics card you can, on a 533 mobo, that will
probably be a 8x AGP card.
