New to Outlook - a few queries/doubts

*Using Outlook 2003 for Mail and Outlook Express for News*

A. Set the defaults to use Outlook Express to access Newsgroups:

1. Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs > Newsgroups > Select Outlook
Express and OK your way out;

2. Do not let Outlook or Outlook Express let themselves set to the default
newsreader:

a. Start Outlook Express to access news. When OE prompts you to make it
your default newsreader the next time you launch it, click the "Don't ask me
again" box and then click the "No" button;

b. Close Outlook Express and start Outlook 2003. When it asks whether
you want to set Outlook as your default mail and news handler choose "No".
Leave Outlook open and continue to the next section.

3. Set the Outlook Toolbar:

a. Choose View > Toolbars> Customize*;

b. Select the Commands tab;

c. From the Categories list select "Go";

d. From the Commands list select "News" and drag & drop it to any place
you want on the Toolbar. The default location is in the "Go" menu.

e. Press Close to return to Outlook.

*Not seeing the News option in Customize? Choose View > Toolbars > Customize
> Toolbars (tab) > Select Menu Bar and press Reset > Start again from #3
above.

B. Start Outlook Express as Newsreader from a shortcut

1. Copy the following line to your clipboard (CTRL+C):

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /newsonly

2. Right click on an empty area of your Desktop and choose New > Shortcut;

3. Paste the contents of your clipboard (CTRL+V) into the "Type the location
of the item" box;

4. Press Next;

5. Type a name for the shortcut (e.g., Newsreader);

6. Press Finish and your shortcut will be created. You can drag & drop this
shortcut to anywhere you want (e.g., Quick Launch toolbar, Shortcuts section
of the Navigation Pane in Outlook 2003).

few words about question number 1.

No version of Outlook has ever incorporated newsreading capability.
Outlook *appears* to have this built-in, since from it you can start
what it reports as the "Outlook Newsreader." However that is simply
Outlook Express, running in newsonly mode, with the name on the Title
Bar changed.

If you like OE as your newsreader, you can stick with it, or you can
substitute any other newsreader of your choice.

Some people complain that Outlook doesn't do news, but personally I
never understand that point of view. To me, news and mail are two
different things, and there's no particular reason why a single
program should do both. Personally I choose which program I want to
use for each (Outlook 2007 for mail, Agent 4.2 for news), and don't
care that the two aren't bundled as a single package.

I am using Outlook 2002.

Your advice is sought on the following points:
1. How does one backup the data of Outlook for future use?
2. How does one backup and restore the Contacts on a different computer,
say at home?
3. By mistake I imported Contacts twice from OE address book and had the
"Check for duplicate contacts" checked but Outlook did not do any checking.
Now how do I delete the 300 odd duplicate contacts?

1) http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.asp (Mail, contacts, tasks,
calendar, .etc is stored in personal folder [.pst] files). For what its
worth, if your computer has two or more physical hard drives. Keep the PST
file(s) on the non-OS drive.


2) I have found it easiest to export to a CSV file and then import said file
on the new computer

3) If the items are still in the Windows Address Book (OE's address book), I
would just delete what I have and import them 1 more time.
