Post subject: Outlook, Contacts and address books
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>general (more info?)

After a new installation my contacts are gone. I still have them on my laptop
but have so far been unable to find out how to move them to my PC. The
problem: the details exist in my Outlook 'Contacts' folder but not in my
address book. I have 3 distribution list there and I would hate it if I had
to enter all addresses and names one by one. So I hope someone can help me
out here:
1.) how can I copy or export those distribution lists into an address book
(which as I understand must be a 'Personal Address Book' in order be later be
able and move it to the PC)?
2.) how do I copy them to a flash disk and then import them into both an
address book and the 'Contacts' folder on my PC?

Going through the Knowledge Base I read somewhere that Microsoft is
'encouraging' the users to use 'Contacts' in Outlook rather than address
books. Well, I'd like to 'encourage' Microsoft to leave that bloody to me,
hell .....

You need to export to a pst file, and import into your target location.

Sad - I got that, Holz. What I haven't got is HOW to do that. I'll check out
PA Bear's hints - I stumbled over his name a couple of times previously and
found his advice very helpful, obviously someone who knows what he's talking
about (wow, I shiver Smile).
But generally: if Microsoft products would be half as good as these
newsgroups they would be much better than they are. Have new software tested
by amateurs and experts - each group will encounter flaws the other one
doesn't.

So, even though PA Bear's links didn't actually solve my problem they did
provide the inspiration to it. My problem was mainly with distribution lists
which are not copied into Excel. Easy solution: drag the distribution list(s)
to the desktop and then from there to flash disk (or whatever) using
Explorer. Plug the flash disk into the other computer and drag the
distribution list(s) into the 'Contacts' folder. Done.
