Post subject: Offline Files - Include all new subfolders but exclude selected subfolders?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>work_remotely (more info?)

Hi,
I have a problem with a collegues laptop setup (XP Pro, SP2, all win
updates). We use offline files so a copy of our main data directory on
the server (SBS2003) is available when away from the office.

The problem I have is that we need all new subfolders created within
the offline directory to be synchronised automatically - and this works
with the setting defined in article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262090 - Synchronizing Offline Folders
Does Not Synchronize Subfolders, but we also need to be able to exclude
selected subfolders and this is not possible with the Group Policy
setting enabled in the above article.

It seems to me that the offline files feature only makes sense with the
'subfolders always available offline' setting enabled (and there are
many articles relating to this in the newsgroups) - but this setting
disables the ability to switch off caching for selected subfolders. It
would be nice if there was an alternative setting called 'new
subfolders always set to be available offline' rather than all
subfolders indefinately!

I don't hold out much hope for a solution for this, but thought it
worthwhile posing the question. I have thought about using a
server-side solution if there is one...can you present a directory
share which is a 'virtual view' of a physical server directory to the
users? Is this possible with the DFS feature on Windows Server 2003?

Any comments or discussion is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul
