Post subject: Lost my CD/RW and DVD Drive at same time

I would say that I am an above average knowledge when it comes to computers
but this one has me totally stumped.
I lost both my CD/RW and DVD drives at the same time I get this error
message device manager:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be
corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.
I have tried the following:
1. reinstalling the drivers
2. disabeling then reinstalling the drivers
3. uninstalling device and letting windows install the drivers
4. downloading versions of the drivers other than the ones I already have
5. having windows look for newer versions of the drivers (no sucess)
None of these have worked. If only one of my drives had gone down I would
say the drive had gone bad - but both of them going at the same time tells me
that's not the case. Also - this happened IMMEDIATELY after I installed the
last auto update from Microsoft.
If anyone can help me with this, let me know. Thanks. I just need to know
I'm not crazy and what else to try - I even had a tech over that did
everything he knew how to do and he gets paid for fixing these types of
problems and he could not fix it. |

CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error Code 31,
Code 32, Code 19, Code 39, or Code 41

To resolve your issue, follow these steps:
1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
[Start > Run and type: REGEDIT , and hit enter]
2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11ÂCE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11ÂCE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value,
if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need
to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.
7. Restart your computer.

When I go into reg edit and try to remove the key specified - it gives me
this message:
Cannot delete 4D36E965-E325-11ÂCE-BFC1-08002BE10318 : error in deleting key
I went into advance setup and I have full permission as administrator but it
is not allowing me to select the delete option.
Warning! This is now breaching my know how but if I have specifics in
writing I will make sure not to mess it up - if I do, it's my own fault....

Hi, can you tell me about the autofix? I do not have the same technical savvy
as you - but I have tried the regedit fix (backed up first) and it did not
work(then restored from backup)
Unlike you I have nothing in device manager, and any software relating to
dvd/cd states that no device is available. It was previously working fine. It
does not exist on MyComputer.
Can you help at all?

I just searched for this problem, as we JUST got the exact same error
messages, etc. as the original poster.
This "regedit" fix took care of the trouble immediately!!

We tried using the suggested fix and it did nothing. Thanks anyway.

Lucky! The 'regedit' did not work for me. There were no UpperFilters under
that key. The 'doug' fix did not work either. Are there any other thoughts?

I had originally posted in the Hardware section. Then I did a search within
microsoft.com using the keywords "cd dvd driver" and found this thread. I
noticed other discussions. Perhaps you'll find a workable solution by doing
that! If not, I'd repost your problem to get the attention of a person with
Microsoft training.
I tried the "doug knox" solution, too, and it didn't work on our problem.

Wow, I'm not alone with the same problem. Does any of you have the
LG/goldstar model no. CRD-8483B CD-ROM ?...OR the Phillips IDE-CD R/RW model
no. CDD-4801/81 ? Because I manage to come across what seemed to be the right
drivers for this but unfortunately windows XP won't let me intall them. Has
any of you come up with any ideas yet ? I'm really considering reloading
everything even going back to my old faithful 98 se software. I have tried
the "sfc /scannow" command and is asking me to load the win xp cd, then it
proceeds to tell me is the wrong cd. already delete it the upper and lower
registry filters and that only made my cd drives disappear from device
manager into the limbo. By the way my original error code was 39.
