From what you describe either the OS isn't talking to the drive, or the
drive itself is no longer responding. Luckily there is a relatively
easy way to test which it is.
If you go into the BIOS just after powering on the computer (press F2
at the Dell splash screen) you can make sure the CD drive is being seen
by the motherboard. Also, if you press the eject button on the drive
itself that will test if the problem is the drive or Windows. If it
works in the BIOS then the hardware itself is most likely working
correctly.
While I am not familiar with the registry fix(es) Claggy recommends, if
they do what I think they do then it definitely can't hurt to give it a
try. Since they are registry changes, you can always create a restore
point to go back to if you do not like the results.
Do you remember the filename of the update you ran for the drive? If
you can tell me what model of Dell and, if possible, what model of CD
drive is installed in your system I will be happy to double check what
updates are available. Most updates for CD drives are firmware updates
for the drive itself, so if the update you did caused a problem then
that is something Dell engineers will want to be made aware of.
If you have any other questions about the system I will be more than
happy to provide any help I can.
