Hello,

Once in a while Windows XP Professional SP1 (all updates) will reset my
customized desktop back to the defaults. I only changed a few icons (My
Computer, My Network, and Recycle Bin). Also, their renamed names get
changed back to originals.

It can happen any time. It is not from rebooting or anything either. Why
does this happen? It is very annoying!

Thank you in advance. Smile

Disable the Nvidia Driver Helper service.

Michael, I don't have a NVIDIA card nor its driver anymore. I use an ATI
Radeon 9800 PRO AIW. I already disabled its launcher.

Oh well, that is the only fix I know of. May still be video card driver
related.

How is that? Does it detect something not right to reset?

Grr. It happened again last night. How annoying. For kicks, I checked
Windows XP's event log viewer and found nothing interesting. Sad

Is anyone else using custom icons and renamed icon labels on desktop?

Yes, I am - only customized icons (not names). And I have the same problem;
sometimes the four icons that may be customized from Display
Properties\Desktop get reset for no apparent reason. It does not look good,
and I hope someone has a clue for us! I have a Dell Inspiron with a GeForce
FX Go5200, and am using nView (to manage the use of two screens).

Oh good. I am not alone. This is a bizarre bug! Sad

dOinK,

nView is from nVidea. Either get bug-free drivers or disable the "NVIDIA Driver Helper Service"...

[Start]
| Run |
services.msc
[Enter]

In the Services (Local) list,
right-click "NVIDIA Driver Helper Service"
and then click [Stop].

When "Service Status:" = "Stopped",
change "Startup Type:" to [ Disabled ]
[OK]

You might need to do this first...

Control Panel
NVIDIA Desktop Helper
[Disable nView]
[OK]

-OR-

Get rid of the "Dell Media Experience"

I have disabled the NVIDIA Driver Helper Service, the NVIDIA Media Center
icon in the task bar and NVIDIA Desktop Manager (nView).

*** My icons still, at random intervals, go back to system default ***

Graphics Bios version = 4.34.10.34.B4 -- could that be a buggy one?
Display Driver version = 4.4.8.5 (provided by NVIDIA on 7/31/2003) -- buggy?

I can't find any "Dell Media Experience" here, and have uninstalled most of
the Dell "help/support-ware" that was cluttering my laptop when I got it
(btw I hope Dell stops that practice, it was ugly).

More suggestions are greatly appreciated!

....and today - when updating my graphics drivers (I do not know if that was
the reason) - even the sound scheme was reset to Windows XP default! I've
never seen that before, but I've noticed that sometimes the window animation
(when minimizing, restoring, aso - which I like to turn off) is reset to the
default "on" state (on most systems anyway).

Each time I Control Panel | NVIDEA nView Desktop Manager [Disable nView], it sets "Windows Animation" to ON, so I have to switch it
OFF.

| I have disabled the NVIDIA Driver Helper Service, the NVIDIA Media Center
| icon in the task bar and NVIDIA Desktop Manager (nView).

|

| More suggestions are greatly appreciated!

dOinK,

A recent version of NVIDEA graphics driver caused the loss of Windows settings.

Also, there are issues with high-end Dell PCs - Dell apparently used a defective disk-image to clone a model of a PC.

Also, look on the Dell user forums on their support site for more information.
