Computer: Gateway P4 Home edition SP2

Loaded bluetooth software rebooted computer came up with a
"windows\system32\config\system" error. Tried to do a recovery in recovery
console and tells me to type in admin password. I did and it's not taking my
password. What did I do?

If I ran into this I would simply wipe the drive clean and restart, but as
it so happens my backup drive went out a couple months ago and I have been to
lazy to get a new one. PLUS our "newborns" pictures are on that drive so I
can't just reload xp. Help me before "MOMMA" finds out, please!

Try to Restore the System to an earluier date before installing the
Smartphone software.
To do that try this: on startup Tap or press F8 many times until you get to
Boot Option menu and select Safe Mode. On safe Mode Restore the system to
prior the Mob software installation by clicking Start >> All programs >>
Accessories >> System Tools >> System Restore.

Mark,

I can not get into the recovery console due to my password some how being
corrupted. I used the NT password generator it says the PW is blank, but when
I hit enter it just laughs at me and tells me incorrect PW.

Thanks for the help though.

The Recovery Console isn't asking for the password for your account. It's
looking for the password of the account named Administrator.

What happens if you leave the password blank and hit the Enter key? The default
password for the built-in Administrator account is blank on default. Unless you
created one, which is not the easiest chore on XP HE, it should still be blank.

If that doesn't help, you can download and run this utility to reset the
Administrator password to blank.

Personally, I'd make backing up the data on the hard drive a priority. The
easiest way to do that is to take the hard drive out of the problem computer and
install it as a slave drive on a working system. You would probably have to take
ownership of the folders you were trying to recover.

Tried the NT password changer. It says the password is "blank" even before I
made any changes (just to be safe, put it as blank) still does not work. I
think I got some serious issues here so I will take your advise and put it as
slave get the data and then "time to play hard ball"

Thanks,

Install XP to a new folder, and 'take ownership' of the old files.

Hi steve,
Your HDD may be going bad as the system32 error you got is serious. As Other
helpers pointed out, best if you rescued your data and be ready to clean
install, but first test the HDD health by downloading the Diagnostic tools
from the HDD manufacturer website to see if the HDD is good for clean install
or you will need to get a bigger new Hard Drive (HDD). Of Course if you have
a Retail XP CD to install from It, if you don't have then a new machine is
your next option!.

Your first priority is to back up your files.

Boot from a (free) Knoppix CD and use USB Drives or the network to
backup your files. After that, you can work on recovering your system.

And you are using the Administrator username and password?

You can also follow the directions in the KB article before by hosting the
drive in another XP system (USB2 drive cases are extremely handy for this),
or booting from a Linux CD. You do not strictly need to use the Recovery
Console.
