How do you stop a laptop from going to sleep when nobody is logged on? As
far as I know all the power options are profile related, ie they only take
effect when a user is logged in. I do a fair amount of work remotely, but
when the user leaves for the day and logs out, the laptop goes to sleep after
a while and I can't do my remote work, as I can't wake up the laptop.

Check the properties sheet for the laptop's network adapter. You can access the
properties sheet through Device Manager or Network Connections.

Look for a Power Management tab. See if there's a setting to allow the device to
bring the computer out of standby.

The Power Management tab for the NIC should be similar to this image.

Keep in mind that if the laptop is set to hibernate after a period of time, you
will have to go into the system's Setup program and make changes to the BIOS to
allow Wake on Lan.

Good luck

Following up on my earlier response, after enabling the laptop's NIC to bring
the system out of standby, you may have to run Remote Desktop Connection twice
in order to establish a connection . The first attempt will probably return an
error message, but it will serve to wake up the laptop. Close the error message
and hit the Connect button a second time. Hopefully, this will allow you to
logon to the remote computer.
