What's the fastest way to transfer/import files from an external device into
my local drive. It would be nice if there was a program out there that would
list all of the files found in the external device by category. (ie. Pics,
movies, docs) Please help, Thanks

Either drag and drop or copy and paste works fine. Neither is faster
than the other.

Sort the files by extension, and they will be grouped by category.

Why not search the drive by file extensions such as .jpg .mov .doc etc.?
Then select the files and Copy them.
