Hello,
I don't know exactly what it was that I changed, but this is the deal:
anytime almost any application is launched in windows XP, photoshop launches
instead.
I believe it happened after I was trying to change the target path of one of
the icons in the start menu. I had 2 versions of photoshop, and I wanted the
new one to launch from there, not the old one. So believe I did something
like right-clicking on an icon, then set the path to the photoshop path....
And now, photoshop launches instead of most of my systray processes. Even if
I double click on My Computer, or any other icon on my desktop, Photoshop
launches.
What the heck did I do? I have gone back to try to do the same thing in
reverse, but I can't find anything that would have that effect. Even trying
to launch regedit launches photoshop!
At login, if I start the task manager to watch the processes launch, there
are 5-6 that are not photoshop, but about 20 then get launched, and they are
all photoshop.exe. Of course, most die off, and only 1 succeeds...
Can you give me some leads on things to try/research? Because I am not sure
I know how to describe this behavior in a searchable phrase.
Thanks!
Erik |

Not sure if this is the answer but did you try to do System restore to before
you made the changes?

system restore was turned on, but too many days had passed by the time I
thought of using that, and I no longer had something i could restore to.

I don't know what you did either but it's sounds like some of your
associations are royally botched. Since you were fiddling around at the
start menu, I would think it's at least .LNK files that are wrong. However,
you mention running Regedit is giving you trouble too. If starting the
program from a command instead of a shortcut, you might have messed up .EXE
as well.
Take a look at MVP Doug Knox's page for file association fixes:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
Be sure to read the directions at the top of that page before using any of
the fixes.
