As I look at the screen properties, the Icon description characters do show
a blue back ground. But that was not the way it was before. How do I reset
the Icon description characters without any background view? Do appreciate
any help.

A few places to check:
System Properties> Advanced> Performance> Settings> Visual Effects: Check
the box to show drop shadows on icon labels.

Right click the desktop and if "Lock Web Items" shows a check next to it,
click on it to remove the check.

If still stuck with "holes" in the wallpaper, remove any web items on the
desktop using Display Properties> Desktop> Customize Desktop> Web. Remove
checks next to items in the Web list.

Thank you Sharon so much. I went through your advice and did check the
'use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop', and that took care of the
problem.
Thank you again.
