Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>general (more info?)

I am using win xp, installed HP officejet 5510 software for printer..keep
getting a pop up asking to register on line which has been done numerous
times. Contacted HP suppport and they had me stop the HP service in msconfig
which did not work, then they had me go into win.ini and remove any entries
related to register or remind from the "load=" line in the windows section
which also did not work.

This pop up will repeat itself numerous times over and over to the point
where you cannot work on the desktop.

HP Tech support was no help at all in resolving this...any suggestions

Two things: Try autoruns, its a bit better over msconfig at looking at
any programs that are set to auto run. 2nd, if you only called HP
once, try again, you might have just caught the wrong person. I can't
believe they can't fix their own software... but then again, yes I can
believe it.

"Win.ini?" Are you serious? That file hasn't been actively used by
any version of Windows since 3.x! It's just here to help antique
programs recognize newer versions of Windows.

Anyway, you don't want to use MSconfig to "stop the HP service."
Msconfig was designed to be a troubleshooting tool, not a "startup
configurer." Use MSConfig to determine the location of the command that
is attempting to start the program, and remove it.

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the system registry, primarily in
the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

No real surprise there, I'm afraid.

If you do not see anything HP related in msconfig under the Startup
tab to uncheck (reboot required),
check for the an HP related Scheduled Task do disable/delete.

Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Scheduled Tasks.

If you an HP related Scheduled Task check the Properties and disable
it and reboot.

If you are convinced disabling resolves your issue, you can remove the
Scheduled Task at your leisure.

Try this in order to give us a list of your startup tasks:
1. Click Start / Run
2. Type the following command:
notepad c:\HPReg.bat
3. Click OK.
4. Allow a new file to be created.
5. Copy and paste the code below into this notepad session.
6. Save & close the file.
7. Click Start / Run
8. Type the following command:
c:\HPReg.bat
9. Click OK.
10. Copy and paste the data you see into your response.

@echo off
set Run=SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
reg query HKCU\%Run% > c:\reg.txt
reg query HKLM\%Run%>> c:\reg.txt
notepad c:\reg.txt
del c:\reg.txt

1. I don't see anything HP-related in those keys.

2. Download AutoRuns from the link in my earlier post, which will show
far more start-up locations. Before you run AutoRuns, go back to
"normal" startup with Msconfig. Look through the "Everything" tab of
AutoRuns and then Google for explanations of each HP-related file. This
may be tedious, but will give you a much better idea of what's going on.

3. What is the service that hp tech support told you to stop? In
general, services ought to be stopped using Start>Run>services.msc
rather than Msconfig.

4. HP software is a real mess. It has many modules and they're often
interrelated in obscure ways. Sometimes, the culprit may be a program
that is not run precisely at startup but is instead called by a
different program that is run at startup. If this is the case, the
culprit won't show up on any list of startup programs.

5. While the hp registration pop-up is onscreen, run Task Manager and
write down every process that starts with hp. List them in your next
post (or Google them yourself).

6. If #5 identifies what's causing the popup, either stop it using
AutoRuns (if it is listed there) or try posting in one of the HP support
forums. Even if you can't identify the program causing the pop-up, try
the HP forums. I'd try both the "consumer" forums and the "IT
Professional" forums.
