Working on XP-home;
I work with a lot of similarly named files (data files) and it is often a
lot faster for me to view folders in detail view to make sure I'm selecting
the right ones (based on size and date). Once I'm done with a file, I delete
it (or move it) so that I don't accidently re-use it.
I have a problem with the PC refusing to delete (or move) files, even if
they weren't open (even if I closed every window except the folder view
itself) and after some searching, I found a reference indicating that the
detail view itself is somehow at fault- it accesses the file to get some of
the detailed view data, and doesn't always release the file- in which case
Windows won't let me delete it. This is confirmed by me continuing to work
with these files, and every time it happens (which is quite often) I can
switch the folder view to list, delete the file, then switch back to detail
view. There is no problem deleting the files from a different folder view.
Is there any sort of fix/patch/upgrade that will make it so I don't have to
switch out of detail view to delete files? Hopefully XP has been out long
enough, and hopefully MS considers the ability to move/delete a file
important enough to have come up with some fix along the way. I didn't find
anything beyond the references that helped me realize that the detail view
was the problem.
This is on a desktop with XP-home preinstalled from e-machines (I know, I
know)...
Thanks for any help,
Keith |

Put a shortcut to the recycle bin in the Quick Launch area of the taskbar.
dragNdrop the file from details to the recycle icon.
