Does anyone know how I can tell if I have an active
firewall and to disconect it if it is there?

Also I would like to know how to reinstall Windows
without having to reformat my hard disk>

If you did not install third-party software for this you do only have
to go to the Control Panel > Network Connections, right-click the
internet connection > Properties > Advanced and disable the Windows XP
firewall here (if enabled).
