Fax won't work

I cannot getthe XP fax software to work. In order to dial a long
distance number, I first dial an access code, which is a local phone
number, and then the number long distance number but without the 1 in
fron.. That is, If I am dialing 215-555-1212 and my access code is
1234567890, the I need to dial

123456790 2155551212

where 123 is my local area code.

There is apparently no general way to tell the software not to dial the
1 on the long distance numbers. You have to make a dialing rule for
each area code, which crazy because there are so many possible dialing
codes. Further, the software refuses to use the access code, even
though it is in correct box. I suspecrt that it is confused by my
access code is a local phone number. The whole thing is a complete
mess.

Ist there any decent freeware fax program available that is nice and
simple and that doesn't automate everything so you actually can put the
numbers in that you want?
