Post subject: External Hard Drive PROBLEM ~~ Need HELP!
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>vista>general (more info?)

Hello ALL,

OK, I have an External Hard Drive problem. That problem being it is NOT
appearing in the "My Computer" or "Admin Tools, Computer Management". This
External Drive was appearing in my Sony and first HP, which was returned
because of a bad video card. But prior to the video card failure, I had
partitioned out the External 750GB hard drive into Dynamic Drives (Had 5
partitions, which automatically created the Dynamic Drives). I have had this
drive for about 8 months without a hitch. I bring home my 2nd HP, working
Great, but the External hard drive is not showing up in the areas above. It
is showing up in device manager and device manager states it is working OK.
I ran PC-Doctor, which shows the External Drive, but shows it twice. I ran
the Short Hard Drive Test's; Random Seek, Funnel Seek, Surface Scan, 2nd
Surface Scan. I ran this and the drive PASSED all. Than I ran it on the 2nd
one showing, again PASSED all. I can here the drive spinning, I can hear it
start up and shut down. I downloaded and ran the Western Digital Short Test,
which showed the drive. I ran the Short test it PASSED.

So it would appear there is nothing wrong, but still a no show in My
Computer or Computer Management. I cannot run Chkdsk, becuase it is not
showing up.

So, can someone point me in the right direction.... Thanks Joey

Save all the data on the disk (I guess in your old machine) Format the
drive as Basic, one partition. Use your WD tools if you need to. Then you
should see it on your new machine. After you mount it, you can break it up
into more partitions if you'd like but it should stay "basic"

Hi Bob,

How do I gain access? It is a NO show in My Computer and a NO show in
Computer Management (Admin Tools). It is showing in Device Manager, WD Tools
and PC-Doctor. All of which allow me to run tests to verify it is OK,
nothing else.

Waiting on your response.... Joey

If you didn't get a tool from the drive manufacturer, you can download one
from their website. They usually have versions that run from a bootable
floppy or cd/DVD

Hi Bob & John,

I am DL software from Western Digital and will see what that presents.
Hating to loose a FULL days worth of work, can either guess as to what the
problem is? Why working and than bam, nothing. Just trying to make sure I
don't repeat the problem. Anyway to save the data or is it bye, bye????

Use your WD tools or PC-Doctor and reformat it to Basic, not Dynamic. Then
it should show up and be mountable.
