I put this up on the hardware newsgroup. No response (yet), but I'm
wondering if it might not be more appropriate here, as I suspect it's really
a software issue. And I noticed a few things since then, so I've updated
this request for help.
-------
Windows Vista Ultimate, 32 bit version. All updates installed.
Dual core AMD Athelon 64 dual core @3.10Ghz, 2GB RAM.
I've been using a basic Microsoft USB wireless mouse the entire time I've
had Vista on this machine. About October 20 I started having some problems.
This would be the day after I applied the October 14 updates. It was also
the same day McAfee updated as well.
It wouldn't always scroll when the scroll wheel was turned, and didn't
always select when the left button was clicked, even though I heard the
switch in the mouse click. And didn't move correctly, lagging behind the
move I was making, or sometimes, not moving at all.
I changed the batteries, and it didn't help. So, I figured the mouse had
just had it. Bought a new one and still have similar problems, but with
some changes. Whereas the previous mouse fouled up most of the time after
the problem started, the new one often works right, except for the scroll
which rarely works right. Might have something to do with my never having
installed the Intellipoint software with the old mouse, but did with this
one.
I don't have a restore point that'll take me back to before those updates,
so I can't try that. The ones since didn't change the behavior, so I'm not
seeing any point in trying to back them out.
One other oddity... I didn't notice it at the time, but have since realized
that memory consumption by the system has about doubled since those updates
that seemed to bring in the problem. The machine used to idle at about 20
to 25% usage. It now idles at around 45%.
Now that I'm thinking about it, it acts a lot like the old PS/2 mice did
when the system was too busy to service them, but the worst CPU load I've
seen when this occurs is 50%, and it's often less than 20%.
Thoughts?
