| I am experiencing a problem I have never had before (in last 11 years), the
free space on my hard drive has suddenly began showing a reduction in
available free space.
I have heard that certain operations which backup can get out of hand and
use more space than the operator realizes. Does system restore do this? Any
suggestions would be helpful.

This question pops up with great regularity and the answer
is always the same: It's your disk and you're in the best
position to find out what's eating your disk space. These
tools may help:

I appreciate the response but it leaves me a little uncertain as to what I
should do with the link.

System restore could be one of many programs that can add to your
losing storage space.
Most problems that I have seen with this is hidden log and .dat files
building up and becoming over burdening, along with photo editing
programs making multiple copies of photos and videos.
Duplicate file finder is a free tool that will help you find those
duplicate files and either remove them or rename them:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/dupfilefinder.html
Also these two utillities will help you monitor those hidden dat and
log files that are on your computer.
ATF cleaner
http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=4949&file=10&evp=72ef5a5e927b...6e6a5bc
clean up
http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=4895&file=10&evp=8e77a4e9f7cf...184456b
You can use disc clean up to also remove unwanted files and under the
advanced tab will allow to delete all but the last restore point
defragging will help also. |

Lurkswithin,
You mention disk cleanup. I have tried to run it several times and it
progresses about three blocks and stops. I have left it for several hours
and when I come back it is still sitting at the three block progression from
left to right.
Any ideas on what could be going on with this?
I put in my win disk and replaced the file using msconfig.

James:
There's an indication that your HDD may be failing. Without delay you should
download the HDD diagnostic utility that hopefully will be available from
the manufacturer of your disk and check out the drive.
And I trust you have a current backup of the files on that drive that are
important to you, or better yet, a "clone" of the contents of that drive.

Hmm. You dowload one of these tools, install it and use it.

I recommend Directory Report
http://www.file-utilities.com/downloads/wdir.zip
It can find duplicate files based on the same name, size, CRC and/or comparing byte by byte
It looks just like the MS Explorer, PLUS
It shows the size of each folder (and the size including all subirectories)
The default sorting is by size descending
Each time you open a folder
It shows its subdirectories and their size and the size including all subdirectories
This will quickly show you where all your space has gone
Plus it has screens to show your largest files and largest directories
This will help you clean up files hidden deep within your file system |
