Detected on device DeviceHarddisk5 D during a paging opera..

I have a 500GB Seagate Freeagent drive that is only used for a nightly
backup although it is on 24 days however 15 mins after use it goes to
sleep. It has 300+GB free.

I have checked it using it's own Disk check and it id fine.

Every now and then I see this in the event viewer.

Event ID: 51

Description:
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk5\D during a paging

It is turned off in the Virtual Pager area so what else should I look at
to stop it?

Hello,

You need to perform a full scan rather than the basic error checking.

To verify, first make a backup of your data first. Do it ASAP in the case
your hard disk becomes forever undetectable.

Download and run your hard disk manufacturer's diagnostic utility. Common
brand diagnostics links are given below
Seagate - http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/
WD - http://support.wdc.com/download/

Alternatively, you can download and run HDtune -
http://www.hdtune.com/download.html - and scan your hard disk using it. But
using the manufacturer's utility is better as it performs additional tests.
