Desktop XP Vs Laptop with Vista

Most of the problems you will have in installing XP will be finding all the
drivers for all the devices on the laptop. Some laptop devices are
proprietary and if the manufacturer doesn't have a XP driver you would be
out of luck for that device.

If you do decide to dump Vista and go with XP;

1. If you don't have Vista and driver disk from the manufacturer but were
supplied with instructions to create a restore CD/DVD for Vista from a
hidden partition on the hard drive create that before proceeding to dump
Vista. You may need to go back to Vista if XP doesn't work out for you.

2. Put all your XP drivers on a CD after downloading them

3. Boot with the XP disk and delete all partitions that may be on the hard
drive, create the partition where you want XP and install.

It depends.

You can possibly exercise the downgrade rights *if* your version of Vista
supports this. It isn't necessarily straightforward or quick, and you will
have to wait for a reply to the activation email.

If you want to use the other XP license, you have to move it, if the license
supports being moved (OEM versions do not); you cannot use it twice.

Otherwise, you have to buy a new XP license, AFTER determining that there
actually ARE XP DRIVERS for the laptop's hardware.

You have to format at very least, so there is no issue from that. Delete
and recreate the partition, format it, and proceed.

The *real* issues arise from not having ensured that XP drivers are
available for your hardware. Find them and download them all and save
them to CD. If the manufacturer doesn't have XP drivers, stop, do NOT
downgrade.

You absolutely have to do this first, or you'll be stuck with a partial
install and unsupported hardware.

If you want to test in a relatively safe way, get another hard disk, and put
it into the laptop, and install to that. Set the Vista disk aside for
later use.

In any case you cannot install winxp over Vista, it would require a clean
install.
You might also want to check, first, as to whether winxp drivers are
avilable for your laptop, not all Vista supplied pc's have them avilable,
and of course it may invalidate any warranty.

Because the Vista-equipped laptop boots slower, you're contemplating
replacing the OS?

What else is loading on the laptop (there could be tons of 'stuff' supplied
by the laptop manufacturer)? Maybe you have 7200rpm drives in the PC and
2400rpm drives in the laptop - that'll sure slow down the load. In other
words, you may very well be comparing apples and badgers.

Wouldn't an easier fix simply be: Don't turn the laptop off? Put it in
Standby, or Sleep, or Hibernate, or Chill-Out or whatever quiescent state is
available.
