I have more USB devices than my old 2003 basic Dell Dimension 8300 with
Windows XP Home with SP1 has ports for.
So, I bought a powered D-Link DUB-7 2.0 hub for the "light duty" gadgets,
leaving the powerful stuff plugged into the computer.
It is designed to work on Windows XP, Home or Pro version.
Everything worked great last night....perfect!
This morning, I turned on my system and the the D-Link hub was dead.
The power source is good. The led light showing that the hub is getting
outside A/C power is on and good. The connection from the hub to the
computer is solid.
But, last night, all 7 USB ports were lit up and working great.....fast and
fine.
Now, about 12 hours later, the power is ok, the cables and connection are
ok, but the hub is dead....no lights (except the one 'power on'
light)...non-working.
I called D-Link tech support [snip the 45-minute wait, etc.] and everything
was re-checked........nothing had changed.
The tech said, "The hub isn't working because you don't have SP2." I
replied, "Well, I didn't have SP2 twelve hours ago and everything ran
great."
So, am I just getting hosed by the tech support guys, or is there a direct
correlation with Windows XP Home SP1, SP2 and D-Link products?
I moved a lot of cables to get this thing working....I need help.

I suspect the tech is making things up, but
a) you *really* need to be running SP2 for WinXP - it's a critical SP. Keep
up to date with all critical patches/updates!
and
b) you can certainly try testing this hub on another PC to see whether it's
the hub or not. |

Yes, I should be running SP2, but I've got two issues with it: First, my
present set-up is working fine, spare the hub; second, what if I install SP2
and 10 or 20 of my programs stop working?
According to MS, SP2 wipes out System Restore. That leaves me to hope that
my basic backup will re-install perfectly.
Again, I thank you for your time, help and concern. And, very soon, I will
update my backup and install SP2, but I need to get this present problem
corrected first. Thanks again, I will test on a second machine, then move
on to SP2. |

You've got huge security issues & a badly unpatched OS. Service packs are
generally not "optional" - they should always be installed. Not installing
an SP as important as SP2 is nothing to brag about

I'd be surprised, although there are problems if you have malware lurking.
Do a good backup first. Get Acronis TrueImage Home or Workstation & an
external USB-attached hard drive.

You can uninstall SP2, but you ought to be doing backups anyway - and
Acronis will save your ___ in more ways than just this.

Yep - that's a good plan. Like I said, I think the techs are blowing smoke,
but you really do need to get your system patched and into a supprtable
state. |

I took the hub to a friend, and it is non-functional on his pc, too. So,
I'll return it and think twice about it next time.
My new backup, which is on an external HD, should be ready today, and I'll
install SP2 tonight.
