Post subject: Custom User Profile - selective startup ?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>customize (more info?)

I want to start different programs on login for different users - each user has a unique environment, some with network connectivity, antivirus, firewall, etc. and others with little or nothing running other than the OS (no sound card, network, commnications, etc.)

WinXP Pro, ASUS K8V, AMD 3200+, 1GB RAM, 60GB OS Harddrive
I want to create a user profile where very little loads on
startup. When I used MSCONFIG inside that profile (it's
in the Admin Group now), to uncheck the vast majority of
utilities, helpers, etc., saved, logged out and logged
back in under a different profile (not in the admin
group), the msconfig changes I made carried over into that and the
other profiles and I saw the popup window talking about
selective startup versus normal startup yadayadayada.
How can I create different startup environments for
different user profiles?

Antivirus, Firewalls load as service (and an UI also). For the startup applications, anything you place in HKEY_CURRENT_USER RUN keys applies only to the current user. Modifying the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE applies to all the users.

Ramesh, Although factual, your answer 'seems' a little short of what
kryten was after which was: "How can I create different startup
environments for
different user profiles?"

I'd like to see an answer to that as well as I'm interested in being able to
boot to a profile that would not include the programs for LAN work such as
the Zonealarm or a antivirus as my need would be local using a gps and all
the ram in requires. Dumping programs each time you start the machine
wastes a lot of time.

Not trying to dump on you, just obtain something more in this process.

The response was not a little short, Jim. Configuring the applications per-user is much easier (Just placing the HKLM RUN entries to the HKCU area and vice-versa). Though this can be done manually (by exporting and modifying the REG files), there is an utility written by Spencer, of www.experts-exchange.com (whom I know and trust)

Flip Startup Items Version 1.1.0.1

Spencer (aka, CrazyOne) is not keeping well now:

For Services, I've not practically done it myself. This topic was previously discussed and see if these sources helps you!

Some few services can be run per user, start/run services.msc, double-click
the service in question, go to the logon tab. I do not recommend that you
change the defaults without knowning exactly what you are doing. There are
many service interdependencies, and disabling a service can cause issues for
other services that rely on it. Disabling some services can render a system
unbootable.

David Candy also suggested creating hardware profiles.

Thanks for the info and links Ramesh. I'll do some looking around and
return for further advice should it be required.
