Post subject: CD Burning -- cannot REMOVE files!
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>configuration_manage (more info?)

I'm using XP SP2. By accident, the contents of my C drive got put
into the holding place for file that are ready to be written to CD. I
cannot delete them, because doing so deletes the actual files on the C
drive. I can't figure out how to get those items OUT of the "ready to
write to CD" place.

If I remove one of the items, then the original item in the C:/ folder also
goes into the trash. If I try to move the items into the C:/ folder, I get
a message that it's the SAME folder.

The icons in the CD Burning folder are partially grayed out, and they have a
large arrow pointing downward (NOT the shortcut arrow).

I need to clear that CD Burning folder out, and I sure don't want to delete
the contents of my C:/ drive!

Please help! .......

This has been answered in your other post.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Shaun\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\CD Burning

Erase the contents of this folder.

He's already said that, for some reason, deleting those files also deletes
the files in their original location for some reason. Supposedly he proved
it; that makes it "interesting" as a problem.

He also needs to learn about cross posting; you're right.

Thanks Pop -- Yes, I will CONFIRM that deleting the contents of the CD
Burning folder also deletes the contents of the C:/ drive -- and that would
be EVERYTHING on my computer.

I don't know about crossposting. I do know to start a 2nd conversation if
the first one quits getting answers.

I am a she.

I'd sure appreciate some expert help on this.

It definitely should NOT delete anything but an entry from the list of files
to be written to CD. Actually, I believe those are only shortcuts as well,
and not the real files; just references to them.
I thought you said you'd proven it; if not, the definitely, make the
check. In such case, I don't think they'll be deleted.
If they ARE deleted for some reason, post back with a specific file name
and the EXACT folder path that got deleted but shouldn't have. XP has some
"interesting" ways of listing things on occasion<g>. If you're not sure of
what you're doing, give us a list of some of the .dll's or .exe's or .sys's
and we can tell you where to check after you delete them.
e.g. you might have a lot of them in the format:
C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$ These would be relatively safe to "play
with". Or any *.LOG file on the C: drive, probably.

Umm, starting a second conversation is OK as long as you've had NO
responses, AND have given it a few days first. I guess. Sometimes
rephrasig things can make a bid difference, too.

Cross posting is THE best way to get results from more than one newsgroup,
and it also helps readers who have to read you post over and over and ... if
you don't crosspost. It also has several advantages for you.
This link should help you understand its usefulness:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossposting

I think you'll agree after reading it.

Ulp! Sorry 'bout that. Honest, I'm "too old" to be a chauvinist anymore
anyway Wink. I know it's a fact because my wife told me so! SWMBO's can't
be wrong. Or told they're wrong, anyway.

Post subject: Re: CD Burning -- cannot REMOVE files! -- FIXED!!! :-) [Login to view extended thread Info.]
Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

I FIXED it!

I went through the registry looking for "CD Burning" and found an entry for
my logon name that pointed to the C root drive. I modified it by pointing
it to C:\CD Burning. I logged off, and logged onto a second account. The
second account worked fine. I logged back onto my regular account, and the
CD Burning folder is EMPTY! And all my data is fine. Smile

Shawn -- you did not read my other posts. If you had, you would have seen
that when I erase the "shortcuts", the original files are erased along with
them!
