Post subject: Backup to USB disk
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>basics (more info?)

I have bought an external disk (USB 300G NTFS) and now
I want to do a complete backup (XP Pro SP2 120G). The problem
is that the only device that NTBACKUP can find is A:, no matter if I
try a complete backup or just a folder. For normal use, the external
disk works just fine.

My system hangs in different ways, sometimes twice a day,
sometimes every second week. It also has some other quirks.
For safty I want to have a complete backup before trying any repairs.

Thanks for any help.

It would be useless to create a complete backup to a USB drive
for the drive is non-bootable. In other words, you cannot boot
WindowsXP from a USB drive. Copy and paste personal files such
as documents, music, graphics and pictures to the USB drive. But to
install an app and run it, it has to be done from your "C" drive to
utilize system files/resources and the Registry.

Tell Ntbackup to backup to a file. The file can definitely be located on a
USB disk. Ntbackup can't create a clone of a disk though.

Ntbackup can't backup the drive to an "image". But it support backup
the system to a file.

You can use ghost if you want to backup the full drive. And the uplus
sync will be a good choice if you want to backup your data files to the
usb driver daily.
