Which file/folder? How are you doing this? Can you give us exact steps? You
cannot encrypt c:\windows if that is what you are attempting to do. If you
could, the system would be unable to boot.

I just put the hard drive from my previous computer as a slave on my new
one. I cannot get into a file, says "access denied" on the old
drive--althought the drive is recognized and I can access useres who didn't
have a password protected signon, this user had been password protected at
sign on. Is there anyway to open this file? Both computers were XP, the old
one an E machine, the new is a Dell. I know the user's password. Any way to
boot the system from this old, now slave, drive??? |

I still fail to see how this is related to an access denied error in Windows.
Regardless, if you are currently using Windows XP Professional, here is how
you get access again:
1. Right-click the file or folder (easier with folder)
2. Select properties
3. Click the security tab
4. Click Advanced
5. Click the Owner tab
6. Select "Administrators" in the "Change Owner To"
7. Click the check box for "Replace owner on ..."
8. Click OK
9. Click Add...
10. Type Administrators and click OK
11. Check the box for "Full Control"
12. Click OK
That should do it. You may need to do that a few times, depending on how
security is set up currently. If your current computer is running XP Home,
this won't work. In that case you would need add-on tools.

First off, if you want to ask a question, start a new thread.
Posting your question into the middle of another discussion
limits your chances of getting the correct answer.
Now to answer your question, if you're Dell is running XP
Professional, you need to disable Simple File Sharing, take
ownership of the files and assign your account Full Control
Permissions. If you're Dell is running XP Home Edition, you'll
have to boot into Safe Mode and then take ownership. Take a
look at these articles for more info;
How to disable simplified sharing and set permissions on a
shared folder in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307874/
How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421
"Access is Denied" Error Message When You Try to Open a Folder
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810881
For Windows XP Home Edition.
To start in Safe Mode, reboot your computer and
start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything displayed
on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup
Options menu appears. Use the up and down arrow keys on your
keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter. Log on with an account
that is a Computer Administrator.
Good luck

I had the same problem as this chap. The key bit of knowledge was what you
imparted right at the end - "For Windows XP Home Edition. To start in Safe
Mode, reboot your computer and start tapping the F8 key ..." This appears to
be the only means of accessing the file/folder security settings in XP Home.
All other Knowledge Base article had been most frustraing, e.g. Article
810881 seemed to relate to the problem (I had a partial disk failure & had
copied files from my account onto a spare HD before re-installing XP on a
re-formatted C drive), but it included the advice "My Computer..Tools
menu...Folder Options...View tab -
Under Advanced Settings, click to clear the Use simple file sharing
(Recommended) check box" There was no setting for this my XP Home 5.1.2600
SP!
Anyway, that was a really useful tip and seems to have sorted out all my
issues about granting permissions, taking ownership, etc. of NTFS files in XP
Home.
It should be a little easier to find though - through Knowledge Base, for
example.
Thanks.
