I am having all kinds of problems that are being created by the limitations
in the partnership settings. I really can't believe that the only two
options are "replace items on device" and "replace items on desktop" ..... I
make changes in both places and need them to "sync" .... how about a 'notify
me if there is a conflict and let me decide' or perhaps 'update with newest
modification' ????
Really limiting to have only a single 'master' ..... I really don't want to
go back to third-party software.
Please update.

Believe it! That's the way it is with modern PPCs, unfortunately.

Conflict notification ended
with PPC 2003.

I suspect the "official" solution is to use an Exchange server so all
changes are immediately updated on all devices. For a free
alternative you can use the 3rd-party Emoze software (www.emoze.com)
that allows wireless sync between one PC and one mobile device.

Please understand that these options only come into play with a conflict.
That would mean you have changed something on the same contact or a calendar
entry on both the PC and PPC between syncing. That is if you changed Bob
Smith's phone number on the PPC and Bob Smith's anniversary date on the PC
and then sank (sync'd, whatever) that would be a conflict (same record) and
the conflict resolution set would take over. One change will be lost. Even
if notified and asked, one would be lost. You would just get to pick which
one, if you recalled what you had done to each. If you change Bob Smith's
phone number on the PC and Tom Jones' anniversary date on the PPC and sync,
each will transfer to the other device just fine. Different records, not a
conflict. Conflicts are not based upon any change in Contacts, but rather a
change in the same contact in both locations.
If you just remember to cradle/sync your device, when you get back home,
before you start making a bunch of changes on the desktop, or remember to
sync your device after making a bunch of desktop changes, before heading
out, you will never have a conflict to be resolved.

Thanks for the information -- yes I understand this. The problem is more
basic.
1. Create a new calendar item in Outlook/Exchange.
2. Sync
3. Update the calendar time on the handheld device.
4. The device is overwritten by Outlook/Exchange upon next sync as a
'conflict'
So, the new time of my appointment (valid and important) is not only never
updated in Outlook (I could almost live with this) but it is changed BACK to
the original time (so I miss a meeting or MD appointment or whatever).
Thanks again.....

What you describe there should not happen.
Should be
1. Create a new calendar item in Outlook/Exchange. (The desktop side is new)
2. Sync (now the Desktop and PPC match)
3. Update the calendar time on the handheld device. (Now the handheld is
new, the desktop has not changed)
4. Sync, and the new calendar time should be updated on the PC
(outlook/exchange)
Just ran that scenario on my system and that's how it worked. Changed the
time on both devices between syncs and the PC won, as it is set to do on my
system, but I got no indication that there was a Conflict, it just did set
to the PC time.(overwrite PPC)
I reconfigured the connection so that the PC would be overwritten on a
conflict. I changed the PC time only and it was sync'd to the PPC. When I
changed the time on both the PC and PPC, the PPC setting overwrote the PC
time as I had set it to do for a conflict. Again there was no indication
there was a conflict, I just knew I had created one.
If it indeed it is overwritten and you get the PC time back on the handheld
in step 4, what makes you believe it is due to a conflict, as you are not
prompted about that. Is there anything else unusual going on? You aren't
having to recreate a partnership each time are you? Do you have any
utilities running that might make your calendar items on the PC believe they
have been changed? The system doesn't really keep track of what change is
newer, just that a change was made. It normally assumes the changed item is
the new one. If both have changed the conflict rule is used.
A delete, BTW is gospel. If an item is deleted, even if you change the item
on the other device, the delete wins, regardless of how the conflict rule is
set.
I'm not sure I have helped any, but what you describe is not normal
behavior, if you only change the item on the PPC.

I have discovered that 'conflict' applies even if I only made the change to my device. Since my default was to ignore changes to my device, all of the changes to contact information that I added from my device got eliminated in favour of the original (and unchanged) contact info from my desktop computer.
This seems to contradict your suggestion, Sven, that it is only if I change BOTH. Any hints? I have now royally screwed up any contact updates because of this and would like to avoid this in the future.

E.g. if I added a new phone number to Bob Smith's record on my Pocket PC, it got wiped out when I sync'd because the records were different (not because BOTH had been changed).
