Is it possible to upgrade PDAs with Windows CE or Pocket PC 2002 software to
a more recent operating system like Windows Mobile 2003 or Windows Mobile
5.0? Specifically, I have the following PDAs which I wish to upgrade:

1. Casio Casseiopia E 115
2. HP Jornada 560 Series
3. HP Ipaq 5455

Any hints/suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

For Windows CE, and platforms like Pocket PC based on it, upgrades are
entirely up to the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) for each
device. That means you are dependent on Casio and HP. Upgrades aren't
common, especially for older devices.

I just used google (http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search) to
look up
jornada 560 upgrade
and got 89 hits. I took a quick look and wasn't encouraged.

I also looked up
casio e115 upgrade
and got 362 hits. This time the news was more explicitly bad.

And
Ipaq 5455 upgrade
got 134 hits. Again the news is not good.

Hello,

No, it is not possible to upgrade these devices to Windows Mobile 5.

For a complete list of devices that had a Windows Mobile 5 upgrade
offered, visit my website at
http://www.clintonfitch.com/wm5/default.asp.

I believe the only one that could be upgraded would be the 5455 and that
only to 2003. Look on eBay for an upgrade CD for the iPaq, Hp no longer
offers an upgrade for the 5455. Sorry

That's assuming they're even upgradable to Linux, and that if it is that the
upgrade would be useful. The first two are dinosaurs (i've got one of
each).

Can't be upgraded to anything, not even Linux (has a non-flashable ROM chip)

Can't be upgraded to WM2003

Can (and SHOULD!) be upgraded to WM2003; Linux is OK (see the latest
Familiar distro at http://familiar.handhelds.org/releases/v0.8.4/ )

Even if a PDA can be upgraded to WM5, I would check that any applications
you use will work. Some require upgrades. Some won't work.
