My elderly Palm T3 has died. I need a new PDA. There is a wide array
of choices out there. Whats your advice on a T3 replacement (besides
another T3). I use a lot of Palm OS databases for tracking (SmartList
Hndbase)(in my work), so I need a machine that will run these. I do
like the T3 so If I get another one, thats fine by me..but is there
anything better. I don't care about connectivity..just fastest and
maximally sized screen that can be rotated
Thanks

I'd go for the Palm T-X if I were you. No Tungsten 5 and no LifeDrive, unless
you need plenty of storage space or have large pockets/purse. The Universal
Connector 'barrier', which I believe has not become an issue until the T-5
emerged, will only become a deterring factor if you depend on peripherals
like a keyboard.
Best wishes,
Roy

Cool Roy
So it looks like the size of the TX is comparable to the T3 opened
up. The TX has some nice features, and the $$ is right
Thanks for the advice

I suggest that you wait until you hear the advice of others in this
newsgroup. My advice is based primarily on what I hear, read, and judge by.
I still own a Tungsten T and I play with newer units only on rare occasions.
Best wishes,
Roy

I have both a TX and T3. I can wholeheartedly recommend the TX as a
replacement for the T3. My main motivation for getting a TX as a successor
of the T3 was the built-in WiFi. Also its battery life is much better
than the T3. One disadvantage (?), I like the look of the T3 better than
the TX, but that is very personal.

Another vote for the TX here. I replaced my T3 with a TX and I am very
pleased with it. The slider always annoyed me and the battery life was
terrible. I think the TX looks great - I'll take black over silver any day
and it matches my SLVR nicely. The Wi-fi works fine, as does the Bluetooth.
The things that got dropped compared to the T3 - voice recorder, vibrating
alarm - I find I don't miss.

I recently had a quick play with a T|X -- I'm worrying that my T|T is not
long for this world -- and it is certainly a nice device to handle.
The GUI is a bit different from that of the T|T (and of other Palms I've
owned before) but most of the familiar stuff is easy to find.
Graffiti 2 stinks (but I knew that, and at least it's not quite as
malodorous as the character input on Pocket PC) ... but what really
surprised me was the difference in feel of the stylus on the screen. Where
the T|T's screen is hard and smooth the T|X's screen was softer under the
stylus, and felt "rubbery" -- that is: the stylus resisted being dragged
across it. Is that typical?
Palm *do* provide a screen protector in the box that may alter this, but it
had not been fitted to the model I was playing with.
It's not that the new feeling is unpleasant -- I'd probably get used to it
-- just that it was really quite different, and I hadn't been expecting it.

I'd miss the vibrating alarm, I never saw the point of a voice recorder.
Cheers,
Daniel. |

Reading your description I thought you were describing a TX with
the screen protector on it. The screen protector provided is very
sticky. I like the screen without it, but am using it (screen protector).
My only previous palm was an original Visor.
Graffiti 1 can be loaded onto the TX with no problem. There is a patched
one. I use it. |

No, this was a brand new T|X whose box had only just been opened in the
shop. I suppose it's possible there was a film over the screen to protect
it in transit and that hadn't been removed, but I think I would have
noticed.

Yes, thanks, I know. If I buy a T|X I'll use it too. |

I've often wondered what I would replace my T3 with if it died (or if I
broke it while replacing the battery).
I figure that while a new TX or Lifedrive would be great, I'd probably
get another used T3.
Two reasons. All my accessories fit the UC, so wouldn't work on the TX.
Used T3s are a lot cheaper than new TXs.
And looking to the future, the new Palms are well overdue and I would
certainly expect something comparable to the TX but linux based to be on
the market within a year (and it had better *not* be a Treo, or I'll
never buy another new Palm, ever), and how am I going to justify
upgrading to one if I've just bought a new TX? |

They do. A co-worker just showed me his camera-free Treo 650 the
other day.

Interesting ... I had heard rumours of such a beast, but never seen one in
the 'flesh', nor anyone offering them for sale.
Any idea how I might get hold of one (in the UK)?
Cheers,
