I have almost the same scenario as Franbo, but I haven't yet tried to activate
before the reset as Christine suggested to me, I will try that as soon as
I can, even if I am not so sure it will help any. But I've tried all the
other steps before.

One thing though that I saw was that the last couple of times that I have
unistalled and then reinstalled the Reader, it has not prompted me to make
a reset, as it did....at least the first time due to the fonts (as it said).
Can we be sure that the uninstallation from the PocketPC works as it should
and that it is not files and registry settings still there after uninstall.
If it was possible to know what files/registry settings that could be important
to check in this matter, I could do that.

My Active sync is 4.0.0 (Build 4358)

Hardware/Software: QTEK 9100 / Swedish Windows Mobile 5.0

Regards,
J-O

Franbo:

I did have one user try activating prior to performing the required soft
reset and was sucessful. You might try that. You don't by chance have a ROM
install of the Reader do you? Let me know if this resolves your issue. If
not we have a few more things that we can try.

Sincerely,
Christine - Microsoft Reader Team

Post subject: Re: Update Microsoft Reader Now Available! Removal Instructions [Login to view extended thread Info.]
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>pocketpc>ebooks (more info?)

Here is my modified complete removal instructions for the Microsoft Reader
and DRM
components.

To Remove from desktop (IMPORTANT - Even with PPC installs you still have a
desktop component installed that needs to be removed)

On the desktop go to Control Panel | add/remove programs
Find the Microsoft Reader for PPC install entry
Click on modify/uninstall then Ok
Close add/remove and control panel

Make sure that there are no entries on your desktop in C:\Program
Files\Microsoft ActiveSync for:

"Microsoft Reader for Pocket PC"

To Remove from Device (IMPORTANT - Your new install will not be successful
unless you have done a Remove all, choosing the other method will not
removed
the cached version of Reader setup)

Cradle device
Open ActiveSync and sync the device
Go to | Tools | Add/Remove Programs...| (on ActiveSync on the PC)
Select Microsoft Reader and go to the Remove all section at the bottom
Click remove, and OK
Select "Microsoft Activation" and go to the Remove all section at the bottom
Click remove, and OK <<**Note that by doing this you'll need to reactivate
your PocketPC**>>

**** If the add/Remove programs dialog closes at this point, and you drop
back to the ActiveSync window, then Go to | Tools | Add/Remove Programs...|
again within ActiveSync on the PC. Scroll down to Microsoft Reader if it
still shows it has NOT been uninstalled from your Pocket PC! You'll need to
at this point go to your Pocket PC, and there tap | Start (menu) | Settings
| System | Remove Programs (icon) | Highlight Microsoft Reader and then tap
on Remove. I suggest soft resetting your Pocket PC at this point, and again
checking in Start (menu) | Settings | System | Remove Programs (icon) | for
Microsoft Reader. It should not be there. Re-cradle you PocketPC and allow
it to again sync.

Verify that the files and registry entries listed below have been removed
from your device. These files should no longer be on your device or
removable media. ***I believe at this point that if Microsoft Reader is NOT
listed in either the PC ActiveSync Tools | Add/Remove Programs... and it is
not listed on your Pocket PC, in | Start (menu) | Settings | System | Remove
Programs (icon) | then it should be safe to attempt to install it again.

Either Run MSReaderPPCUSASetup.exe again or re-download it and runit again.
Note that this file should be 2.28 MB in size and not 2.25 MB in size. If
your file is 2.25 MB in size I believe you have a copy of the old 2.4
version of reader, the new 2.4.1 version is 2.28 MB in size, and will state
right after you click on "Next >" END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT FOR MICROSOFT
READER 2.4.1 on the License Agreement page.

The following info is for thoes who wish to confirm that the old reader has
been removed.

Make sure that there are no folders on your desktop in C:\Program
Files\Microsoft ActiveSync for:

"Microsoft Reader for Pocket PC"
"Microsoft Activation"

If either folder exist they have not been uninstalled from your PC,
successfully!

Files installed by the Reader: (maybe in either \My Device\Windows, \My
Device\Storage Card\Windows, or \My Device\Storage Card\Program
Files\Microsoft Reader\ (***Note that Storage Card may also be SD Card in
some systems.***)

aud_file.dll

Files installed by Activation(assure that these files are removed from your
system prior to any activation effort):

Please help! I've done all steps carefully. Still no success.

I've completed all installation steps, all removal steps, all
re-installation steps et cetera.

Steps I took...

I've cleaned my PC of all reminents of MS Reader for PPC from the PC's
Control Panel and then re-downloaded and confirmed that I had the right 2.28
MB MSReaderPPCUSASetup file.

I did a hard reset of my PPC, just for good measure. Blew away everything!

For extra good measure, I blew away my PC's Internet Explorer cache of Temp
files and Cookies. Also removed DASWebDownload Class (version: 2,0,1,3184)
from IE's Downloaded Program Files (so it would reinstall upon reaching the
activation page).

I reinstalled MS Reader 2.4.1 on the PPC.

I went to the Activation page. Logged in the the same old Passport.
Message: "You have an older version of Pocket PC which does not support
Activation. Activation requires Pocket PC 2002 or later."

Particulars...
- Brand new HP iPAQ hx2790.
- ActiveSync 4.0.0 (4343)
- DASWebDownload Class (Microsoft DDN Activation Control version:
2,0,1,3184)

Robert:

Did you activate prior to performing the Reader installation soft reset?
Also, do you have a ROM installation of Reader?

Sincerely,
Christine - Microsoft Reader Team

Robert:

That error message is generated by the presence of udhid.dll in the \windows
directory of your device. If you have ever installed a previous version of
the Reader to an SD card and copied this file to your windows directory it
will not be deleted by the uninstaller and will keep the new version from
being registered properly. This is a hidden file and so if you have a
operating system lower than WM 5.0 you will not be able to see it unless you
are viewing via activesync with your file explorer setting set to show
hidden files and system files. If you have WM 5.0 you should be able to tap
on "menu" in device file explorer and choose "show all" and then see the
file.

Please contact me offline if this doesn't help and I will do my best to
assist you.

Sincerely.
Christine - Microsoft Reader Team

The udhid.dll file in the \windows directory is the correct one. It's dated
11/21/2005 8:14:26 AM. (That's correct, right?)

I'll contact you offline.

Thanks for your continued support,

What I hear her saying is if you have udhid.dll in your windows folder you
will NOT be able to activate or reactivate your device. That this file needs
to be deleted before you attempt to activate. As well as;

secrepid.dat
secrep.dat
secrep.dll
secrep.xml

Well on this page click on the file that is clearly marked as 2.25 MB, on
the page that pops up you *should* see "Type Application, 2.28 MB". If you
don't then chances are the page is being stored somewhere between Microsoft
and your computer. You can try refreshing the page. Note that someone at
Microsoft just forgot to update the link. The real file is there
