An update Microsoft Reader (v. 2.4.1) is now available at
http://www.microsoft.com/reader/downloads/ppc.asp .

What's new?

Windows Mobile 5.0 activation support
Ability to install Reader to removable media and retain ability to
activate without copying files.
Ability to install Reader to removable media without having to copy font
files
Shortcuts are now created at install time assuring that the shortcut
points to your install on removable media.
Anything that I need to know before I install?

On WM 5.0 you will notice that you will now have the choice about where to
install the activation CAB that is downloaded during activation. Use the
device location or activation will not be sucessful.

Existing ROM installations are proving difficult to work around and so it
is recommended that you hold off installing until we have defined steps
established early next week.

If you encounter any issues with this release please feel free to post here
or reply to me offline and I will do my best to assist you. Please expect a
48-72 hour turn around.

Sincerely,
Christine - Microsoft Reader Team

Hi Christine,

I'm still having problems activating. I downloaded the new version of
Reader, installed it to my Device location and it still insists that 'You
have an older version of Pocket PC which does not support Activation.
Activation requires Pocket PC 2002 or later.'

I'm using WM2005 on a Uk version of the O2 XDA Exec - a variant of the HTC
universal.

Hope you can help.

Regards

Charlie

CeeBee,

I checked my version of Reader hoping that it woul simply be that the link
was wrong, but my version shows as v2.4.1 Build 5233.

This is worrying then, that a new version of Reader still will not activate
with Wm2005 devices after weeks in development to achieve precisely that.

Christine,

for information is this a problem with the website activation or the program
itself? What devices was the WM2005 activation tested on?

Regards

Charlie

Cee Bee and Charlie:

When you look at your version (Found in Reader Settings | About Microsoft
Reader) you should see 2.4.1 (build 5323).

In some of my previous posts to the group I have mentioned the that that
ActiveSync caches installs. Unless you remove the installs from these
cached locations you will find yourself installing the old program over and
over again until you removed the cached setup. It does this so that you can
more easily recover from a hard reset.

You should note that just trying to reinstall the Reader does not install
the new Reader over the top of the old build. Please follow these steps:

On the desktop go to Control Panel | add/remove programs
Find the Microsoft Reader for PPC install entry
Click on modify/uninstall
Close add/remove and control panel

Cradle device
Open ActiveSync and sync the device
Go to Tools | Add/Remove programs
Select the Reader and go to the Remove all section at the bottom
Click remove
Once the release has disappeared from the program listing close the
add/remove programs dialog
Go to http://www.microsoft.com/reader/downloads/ppc.asp
Click on the setup.exe
Choose "run" and follow the install instructions.
Attempt to activate

Let me know if you continue to see the error message.

Charlie - you brought up the topic of devices, more specifically the
HTC-Universal. This was my primary device while I was testing and all
activation scenarios worked - infrared connections, standard USB
connections, installing to device, SD card, uninstalls, etc. The only part
of your configuration that I did not have is the OEM install of the O2 XDA
system. I used an image directly from HTC themselves. Please try the
scenario above and if you continue to see the message please feel free to
email me offline and I will do my best to assist you in trying to resolve
this issue.

Sincerely.
Christine - Microsoft Reader Team

CeeBee:

Because of upgrades to Passport 3.0 we were no longer able to imprint users
names inside of their books. You should however be able to still open your
DRM titles. Have you always used the same passport account? If you activate
with a different passport account other than that which you purchased your
titles you will be unable to read the titles. Can you tell me what symptoms
you see when you attempt to open these titles (e.g what error message do you
receive?).

I would like to provide any assistance that I possibly can to help you
regain use of your Reader titles.

Sincerely,
Christine - Microsoft Reader Team

Hmm I seem to be caught in this as well. I have downloaded the program
twice yesterday. I have repeatedly:

On the desktop gone to Control Panel | add/remove programs
Found the Microsoft Reader for PPC install entry
Click on modify/uninstall, then | OK | Finish
Close add/remove and control panel

Cradle device
Open ActiveSync and sync the device
Go to Tools | Add/Remove programs
Select the Reader and go to the Remove all section at the bottom
Click remove | OK The add/remove programs dialog closes.
So I go to Tools | Add/Remove programs again, The program is listed, with
0Kb, I've gone to the device | Start (menu) | Settings | System | Remove
Programs | Slected Reader tapped Remove | OK | It appeares gone on my
device. Done a soft reset. Resync my device. Gone (on the PC) to Tools |
Add/Remove programs and checked that it is gone, and it is.
Once the release has disappeared from the program listing close the
add/remove programs dialog

I have then run MSReaderPPCUSASetup.exe This results in for me the same 2.4
build 5070 being installed.

I've redownloaded MSReaderPPCUSASetup.exe done the above and again gotten
2.4 build 5070. At this point I have tried about everything I know of to be
sure that 2.4 build 5070 is not on my system.

ActiveSync is at Version 4.1.0 Build 4841
Device is at Version 5.0 OS 5.1.1700 (Build 14354.0.1.1)
PC Windows XP Professional Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_adr.050301-1519

Seems to be related to the program I was downloading, tried again this
morning and finally got a program that says it is version 2.4.1 in the eula.
If you download a program that is 2.25 MB in size you are getting the old
2.4 version. If it is 2.28 MB in size it is the new version.

I managed at last to get the right download after Davids advice on file size,
and the reader on my PPC reports version 2.4.1. Before installation I uninstalled
PPC Reader on both my PC and my device. But still there's an error when trying
to activate, about an old version of Pocket PC.

Christine,

Finally got it working.

I have been trying to install Reader on a new PC and after a hard reset on
my PDA, but even after following your instructions abut using the add/remove
programs ec. it still wouldn't work after four attempts.

In the end I followed your instructions once again, but then after the
install to my PDA was completed I performed the activation BEFORE resetting
my PDA to install the new fonts etc. and the activation worked straight away.
Previously I had reset my PDA then tried to activate.

Just thought i'd mention it in case it helps anyone else. Many thanks for
your efforts on this.

Regards

Charlie

Jan:

I have heard a number of helpful hints over the last few days. One of these
was to follow my clean installation procedure, then activate right away
before performing the recommended soft reset (to register the new fonts),
soft reset and then attempt to open your DRM content. You might give that a
try. If this continues please feel free to respond back here or email me
offline and I will do my best to help you resolve your situation.

Sincerely,
Christine - Microsoft Reader Team

Hi Christine,

Alas still no joy with the activation here. I still receive the "older
version which does not support activation message".

Some relevant details:

Hardware & Software:
- Pocket PC is an iPaq 2490.
- PC I am activating from is Windows XP Professional 2002 SP 2 (if that
matters)
- Reader file downloaded is latest one from link provided

Previous versions of reader uninstalled from both PC and Pocket PC using the
exact steps provided in other posts (installed to the Device).

New version of reader installed following the exact steps provided in other
posts. The versions shows as 2.4.1 (Build 5323) on the Pocket PC.

But alas the activations provides the usual "You have an older version of
Pocket PC which does not support Activation. Activation requires Pocket PC
2002 or later." error message.

I tried this both with and without a reset of the Pocket PC after the
installation before trying activation.

This is getting increasingly frustrating... Any ideas?
