Post subject: Synch issues on a new computer?
Archived from groups: comp>sys>palmtops, others (more info?)

I just moved my Palm Desktop (v4.1.4) over to a new computer. I also
installed the HotSynch Manager onto the new computer as well. (My new
computer runs Win XP Pro. I am running Hot SYnch Manager 6.0.1. And I have
a Palm One Tungsten E2.)

When I now push the Synch button, I get a message in the tray that says:
"USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB Devices attached to this
computer has malfunctioned, and WIndows does not recognize it". (It also
lists a little "tree diagram" with USB Root Hub and below that Unknow Device
and USB Composite Device.

Any idea what is causing this and what it will take to find a solution?

(As you may be aware, Palm Support wants to Charge $$ me to answer simply
questions....)

Thanks for your help!

It sounds to me like you haven't installed the Palm USB driver on
your new computer. Did you "move" the desktop using the Palm install
disk or by copying files?

Palm desktop should not be "moved", it must be "installed".
You must have admin rights and all software should be quite, including
firewall and antivirus.

Then Hotsync the PIM data to the new computer. If something is screwed
up you still have the data backed up.

Once you have the new install working, then install the 3rd party
conduits one at a time and sync to test each one.

If all else fails get an IR device and sync your Palm through it. This
was the only way that I could continue to use my Palm IIIxe, as I no
longer have a computer with a serial port.

The IR device plugs into the USB port. The one I got came with its own
drivers. I have used it for years and have not had any problems.

No, I actually did *install* the palm desktop. ("Moving it" was a figure of
speech.)

If I installed the desktop, shouldn't the palm USB driver have gotten
installed with it?

Is there a way to check for this driver?

What can I do to install it if I don't have it?

Thanks!

Then it should work, if your install disk supports XP. It worked
fine for me with the disk from my T|X. There is usually a warning
on software for any USB device that you should install the driver
*BEFORE* you plug in the USB device, otherwise it does something
wierd (like setting up a default driver) which messes things up.
The recovery, I think, is de-installing the software, rebooting,
and re-installing it.

Yes.

I had a similar experience with the T5 "POC" connector for the T5/USB --
those kept giving up the ghost. I gave and use solely bluetooth now --
but the error message sounds familiar. Marginal connections gave me a
similar error as the OP was experiencing ("device not recognized").
