I have used a Tungsten C for about a year now, synching it with my WinXP
Home SP2 home machine daily without problem. 3 weeks ago I bought my sister,
who shares the same desktop machine, a Palm Z22. After installing her
software in her WinXP account, I found that the only way to synch my T|C was
via an IR dongle connected to a USB port.
I spent this weekend reinstalling my software (desktop/hotsynch 4.x) into my
account then reinstalling her 6.0 hotsynch into her account. I've suceeded
in having Hotsynch 6.0.1 appear for both of us minus the "USB" option.
Windows detects a Palm Device and installs drivers for it from either the
T|C or Z22 CD-Rom but neither Palm is detected by hotsynch unless it's via
IR (which works fine but is slooow for my fully loaded T|C - 4-1/2 hours for
a full backup!).
Can anyone point me in the right direction to a knowledge base, FAQ or share
a similar problem resolution with me? Sure would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance! |

---------Solution----------
Start from scratch:
- Sync both palms with Backup conduit turned on so you have a copy. (Being
belt-and-suspenders, I also did BBVFS to my SD card.)
- Copy EVERYTHING in PALM directory to another folder.
- Using RegEdit, backup the registry.
- Uninstall EVERYTHING Palm-related from the machine - in BOTH accounts.
- Using RegEdit, DELETE all Values and Keys related to "Palm" (and
"Handspring", since my T|C was an upgrade from a Treo90).
- Delete the Palm (and Handspring) folders.
- Reboot.
- Install the older Desktop if you want any of the "free" software that came
with it. In my case, I used VersaMail and DTG so had to go thru the fun of
this step. I installed from within my account as administrator.
- Set the conduits to "Handheld overwrites Desktop" or "Do Nothing" as
needed.
- Sync T|C to be sure you've got it all. Took me 2 tries but it finally
happened.
- Reboot to clear installers and log in as same user.
- Install newer Z22 desktop over the T|C stuff - into the same folder.
- HotSync the Z22 from within this account - as long as other user has
administrator rights, HotSync will be able to "see" both Palms, regardless
of account the desktop is logged into.
- Clean-up the Start Menu - make a Palm folder inside your and other user's
C:\Documents and Settings\User1\Start Menu\Programs and C:\Documents and
Settings\User2\Start Menu\Programs so that a third and fourth user don't see
the Palm stuff. Also be sure to put HotSync into the Startup menu for the 2
users that will need it.
Caveat: the Palm Desktop will show info from the other user so be sure to
set private on. Outlook doesn't.
- Install any add-on software that will be desired from within the account
that needs it. Some software installs to All Users, other stuff to Current
User. Move the All Users Start Menu stuff into the individual user's start
Menus like before.
I'd be extremely interested to know if anyone's found a simpler way to
accomplish this... especially since I've spent 2 of my days off making it
happen. I'm a pure novice on this multiple account stuff. Hate to think
there was a dead-simple way to do it.
Thanks! |
