It kept the kids happy until the crippled Zunes came along. I grabbed those
a year ago Christmas at Microsoft's $99 "lets grab market share by selling
below cost" fire sale. I'll put up wiith hobbling to get a 30GB 3.5" screen
video player with TV out for $99!
The Zunes aren't too must of a hassle other than the requirement to use the
Zune software to load/unload media. Since they play .wmv natively, I can
transcode video just once for the two Zunes, the two Spongebob players, and
my multiple WinMo devices. With the TV output, the Zunes also replaced the
need to drag a portable DVD and stack of kidvid discs on vacations. The
Zune jacks into the hotel TVs' AV inputs. (Although any decent iPod has the
same capability.
I almost bought some Philips media players (I can't remember the model
number now) from Buy.com that Christmas for $99 instead, since they played
Divx/.avi natively, AND could actually record video from an A/V input, but
they were flashed-based units (8GB, IIRC), and the 30GB capacity of the
Zunes won out for my C-notes!
