Thoughts about whether this will kill the iDEN line entirely, or will it
get transitioned off to another manufacturer?

This is really sad news. I love my Motorola KRZR phone even though the
software is very slow. You cannot beat the RF performance.

I haven't been keeping up with Nextel specifically, I'm not in their
territory (Canada, TELUS Mike is the local iDEN carrier)

It makes sense that it would happen at some point, the question is just
when.

Did anyone actually read the press release?

I thought not.

"Company will evaluate alternatives to accelerate the ability of its Mobile
Device Business to recapture growth and profitability in an expanding
global market

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Jan. 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc.
(NYSE: MOT) today announced it is exploring the structural and strategic
realignment of its businesses to better equip its Mobile Devices business
to recapture global market leadership and to enhance shareholder value. The
company's alternatives may include the separation of Mobile Devices from
its other businesses in order to permit each business to grow and better
serve its customers."

There is absolutely nothing therein that says Moto is bailing on mobile
devices. The strongest it gets is that they MAY separate it from their
other businesses in order grow and better serve...

It also mentions the possibility of doing this to RETAIN the strong
personnel they already have.

Jeeez, grab a clue will ya?

Thank you. I was beginning to wonder where the missing part was.

Huh?

They did the same thing spinning off their processor business into
Freescale. I doubt if they're going to exit the handset business, just
going to sping it into a separate company that can compete in a low
margin business.

Actually a matter of agility, not margin. A big part of the problem at
Motorola is much lower margin than Nokia (e.g., 11.2% versus 16.7%).
