Hello all:

I don't really understand the technology all that well, hence a noob
question:

I've been a TM2GO prepaid subscriber for a half year with a cheap phone.
I recently started a new job where my employer seems to have some pretty
good deals on phones. I can get an "unlocked GSM" phone for what seems
to be a fairly good price, depending upon the phone model.

Is that what I need for a TM2GO phone? Unlocked GSM? I know some are
dual-band, some quad, etc.

I'd appreciate any suggestions or help.

Thanks,
Guy

Yes. (Alternatively, a locked phone would also be ok, provided it was
locked to T-Mobile.)

There are four bands used for GSM mobile telephones- North America uses
850 and 1900, Europe and Asia use 900 and 1800. Quad-band is the most
flexible, obviously, but a dual-band is fine, provided it's 850/1900 and
you don't plan on using it internationally.

While T-Mobile is a 1900MHz-only carrier, they do allow roaming on the
850MHz band, so I'd personally avoid buying any phone without 850.

They opened up a bunch of 850 on prepaid in mid-2006, IIRC. They've
updated the prepaid map itself to reflect it, but still have never
removed the "no 850" disclaimer you quoted.

I just wanted to confirm that I have been roaming on several 850 MHz systems
w/TMo2Go despite what that web page claims. The prepaid coverage map is
pretty accurate, although there is actually more roaming than what is shown.
It's a bold new world we live in, eh?

If you can get unlocked quad pretty cheap it should serve you well on
TMO or the rest of the world.

I run an unlocked Treo (quadband).
