I purchased 3 iPhone 3GS last month.
One for me, one for the wife & one for the kid.
After downloading iTunes & creating one account I registered all three
iPhones under the same account.
It appears there were backups for each iPhone under one account.
Husband's backup
Wife's backup
Kid's backup
But later on in the week, when I chose to sync each iPhone I found that the
contacts from each iPhone got merged with each other.
I called Apple support. They said the only way to solve the problem was to
create 3 logins on my Win/XP computer, for example: husband's account,
wife's account and kid's account. When we wanted to backup our particular
iPhone each one of us login to our own account, start iTunes and sync our
iPhone. He also told me to right click on the name of the iPhone and select
backup. I asked him what was the difference between sync & backup. He did
not know.
Does anyone know?
Is there a work around for this or was Apple brain dead when they created
the sync backup process? |

Apple never intended for more than one iPhone to be synced for for a given
computer account. You are trying to do something the system was not
designed for.
The difference between sync and backup is that the backup file contains a
duplicate of the iPhone's memory, and that a sync makes sure that the
contents of the various categories (contacts, song tracts, videos, photos,
etc.) on the phone and in iTunes (and iPhoto) are the same.

Looks like I really don't care about the sync process. At least, not at
this time. That might change in the future. I am not going to rule that
out. For right now I am going to tell iTunes NOT to automatically sync when
my iPhone is connected to the computer.
So it looks like what i really want is to backup my iPhone[s] memory
configuration to my computer and/or iTunes or where ever the backup files
are stored. That seemed to work because under one account I saw:
Husband's iPhone
Wife's iPhone
Kid's iPhone
Not realizing what that was I deleted the Wife's iPhone & Kid's iPhone
backup. I would guess if I connected their iPhone to the computer, right
clicked on the name and selected backup I would backup their iPhone's
current memory configuration.
Would anyone be willing to comment on this? And, has anyone else tried this?
TIA |

Your have some other choices. You can sync one device and not the others. Or
you can control which classes of information are synced. For instance, you
could sync the entire music library to all three and the address book and
calendar with just one. And many other variations.
When you have one of the devices connected, click on it in the left hand
pane of iTunes. Many of the tabs provide sync options. Each device has it's
own sync settings so you can mix-and-match to get the combiantion that you
want.
