I get a discount on AT&T/SBC DSL Internet service while using the
iPhone (even without home phone service). For me, you would have
to subtract (or add) that discount to a different provider's
cellphone service charge. I ended up with 6Mb per second DSL home
Internet service for $30 per month (for 12 months) through AT&T.
That plus the iPhone is an efficient connection scheme. Besides, I
am more interested in the iPhone's touch-screen-driven
ultraportable computing capability. I would recommend the iPhone
especially to techies (PC enthusiasts).

Internet does work. It is _not_ 20MB of data just for e-mail.

And it's actually less costly than you state because you can pay that
$39.95 with any PagePlus refill card, including the $50 card that has
$56 of value and that sells for as little as $46 (up to 8% less than the
$50 face value).

$39.95 x 46.00 ÷ 56.00 = 32.82

I need ca. 30 minutes/month (yes, 1 minute per day is enough), no
texting (I use e-mail!) at all - but at least 2GB of data, more is
better.

BTW, if you don't mind paying the full $39.95/month, you can sign up for
automatic refills on the PagePlus web site. You essentially have the
equivalent of a postpaid plan, but with no contract, and service at less
than half the price. But no "free" phone of course.
