If I go to the following VZW website:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/LNPControllerServlet?path=lnppromo1
and enter Verizon wireless numbers for some of my relatives who I know
that have not upgraded their old plans to include "IN Calling", the
website tells me that they are "IN".
Has VZW upgraded everyone, old customer and new, so that they are "IN",
or is this website flawed? Do all VZW customers now have the free IN
calling?
(If you are sure you are not signed up for the "IN" calling, try your
number and see what the website says, and let us know.)
Thanks!

Can you test it out? Do you know someone who has VZW that you could
call on prime time, and check your minutes before and after the call?

Lena, I believe that if your calling plan has "IN", then any VerizonWireless
number that you call will be "IN" for you, but not for them if they have an
old plan with no free M2M minutes. So, it would cost them minutes but not
you.

I pumped in some numbers of friends who have old plans that were not
"IN" but yet it reported they were "IN". I pumped in a landline number
and got this: "Not IN Send an e-card invitation"
The wording of the web site is clumsy:
"You won't use up your minutes or messaging allowance with Unlimited IN
Calling from within the America's Choicesm calling area and the new
additional Unlimited IN Messaging from within the National Enhanced
Services coverage area."
From my understanding (and what is stated in the quote above) if you
are "IN" it already means that do not incur an airtime charge anytime
you call another VZW number. So what exactly is the point of the website
or has everyone been converted to "IN"? |

Unfortunately, no. I've had the phone for 3 years (contract expired 2
years ago, before IN) I only use it for emergencies; all my friends have
non-verizon service, or just landlines.

I've been with them about that long too and share your positive view of the
service. I've found it to be the best around in all the markets I travel to.
But I no longer "like" them as a company because of all the nickel and
diming they've implemented-- not to mention all the take-aways.

Without even going to the site, it sounds like the site is designed to
input a number and it will tell you if that number is a VZW number.
If it's not in VZW's system as a customer's number, they allow you to
send an invite to that person.
Here's how it works and what it's intended for, from what I've seen: A
friend gives you a phone number to contact them, you want to see if it
will be a free call (if you signed up for IN) or if you will use your
plan minutes for the call. Put in the number and it will tell you if
they're on the VZW network by saying they're IN or not IN. It appears
this system is independent of your contract or their contract, it's
only for checking if the person is a VZW customer... |

Hi Lena,
The point of the checker is to see if a number is eligible for IN
calling from YOUR side of the call. If you have IN calling on your
account, then any Verizon Wireless phone will be billed as an IN call on
your bill. It does NOT matter if the other person has signed up for IN
or not; your end of the call will still be billed as IN.
That said, I *think* everyone has been upgraded to IN. Regardless, it
should not matter as long as your account has unlimited IN calling (at
least from your viewpoint... the other end will have to worry about how
their calls are billed).

Its been pretty much the same for me. I started with a "local only" service
at $15 a month, no minutes. This was in college (97-99 on that contract) which
was fine, since it was only there for emergencies.
I'm on the $40 americas choice plan now, but with an employee discount with a
partnering company, so i get a 23% discount, dropping it to around $33 after taxes.
I only use around 4-5 minutes a month, even with the free weekends/nights. I wish
there was a plan somewhere between $0 and $40 though for low-usage people like me.
im paying a ton for time i have no intention of using.
only thing thats kept me from going tracfone is the ability to hook my laptop up
and get online. this was very useful with the northeast power outage 3 years ago.
having that ability is enough at this point to make me keep paying my $40 a month.

Unfortunately, few carriers want to cater to people who want to pay such
low rates on the post-paid level, because it would adversely affect
their ARPU. So, the carriers push prepaid for the lower price ranges
instead.

That's what I am trying to determine. It matters to me, because I have
"IN" calling, but if I call my sister during prime time, I'll be
burning her minutes if she is not "IN".
I'm begining to think that the website
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/LNPControllerServlet?path=lnppromo1
is flawed and just reports that any VZW number is "IN".
