Interesting notation....I wonder how MANY different operating systems this
nonsense will result in after a few more "special group" updates like this?

Another totally wrong comment from the ill informed chronic curmudgeon.

Blackberry has 2 types of customers BIS and BES.
"I" is for Internet - "E" is for Enterprise.

The Enterprise versions are managed by company IT departments.
Who set the permissions and even the capabilities of Blackberry devices
to comply with various corporate requirements.

There is NOT multiple versions as you so wrongly conclude above.
Just the fact that IT departments are managing the BES phones and
exercise control on what gets pushed and loaded on 'their' phones.

"This update is best suited for personal email users. To determine what
type of email you use with your BlackBerry, read the explanations of
personal and corporate email below:

Personal email accounts:
Personal email refers to any POP3/IMAP webmail service that can be
accessed via a web browser. Examples of personal email accounts include
GMAIL, Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, etc.

Corporate email accounts:
Corporate email accounts are assigned to individuals by their employer;
a corporate email addreess typically begins with a user name and ends
with the company's name. Corporate email accounts can be accessed via
Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, etc. For corporate email to be
supported on your BlackBerry device, your company's IT department must
have a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (check with your company's IT
department to verify that it has a BlackBerry Enterprise Server)."

It's not that the phones require different updates as much it has to do
with corporate security policies. Blackberries provisioned to use BES
(Blackberry Enterprise Server) can't receive updates or have settings
changed willy-nilly by the end-user, because it might compromise the
corporation's security policies. The BES phones will get the same update,
but only when the company's IT department pushes it to those phones from
the corporate server. BES-provisioned phones have security policies set by
the corporate server, and can block end-users from installing additional
software, changing data settings, etc. BES Blackberries "know" who owns 'em,
and it isn't the guy using it! Wink

Phones provisioned with BIS (Blackberry Internet Service), that don't use a
BES, are controlled by their end-users, and can accept the OTA updates
directly from the carrier.

I tried it on my WinMo phone- the WinMedia link opened Windows Media Player
Mobile then returned an error ("Parameter is Incorrect"), the Real link
opened Real Player Mobile and returned an error ("Media Type Not Supported"),
but the other two links opened in TCPMP (a third-party open source meadia
player for a bunch of different platforms) and played.

Sounds like your cowboy friend needs to make his streaming links mobile-
friendly! Wink

I had the Storm in my hands at Verizon's main store. I tried to run a
Flash website http://speedtest.knology.net/.....it wouldn't run, no
Flash support. I tried to run a Realmedia streaming radio station....it
wouldn't run, no Realmedia support. I tried to run a Winmedia wma radio
stream...it wouldn't run. I tried to run an OGG stream....it wouldn't
run. The salesman trying to sell it to me was clueless, or tried to act
clueless, who can tell the difference.

Have you discovered any streaming media it can play that I might have
missed? Which media will it play off its memory card? Will it play a
DivX movie? Avi? Flv?

Please tell us more. As soon as my real testing it caught the attention
of other potential customers who were asking ME questions about it, I
was shooed out of the store. Too many started asking other embarrassing
questions, too.

Another thing I noticed is I had no way of calling most media webpages
by their real name. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2 got redirected by
someone along the line to another webpage. I substituted
http://212.58.224.138 and it went to the right website, but nothing
would play as it had no support for Realmedia and wouldn't bring up the
BBC player or its internal player. Major websites are redirected.
Other streaming websites like http://www.radioksey.com/ in Seymour, TX,
was not. I assumed it would play MP3 streams and the sales manager was
getting antsy so I didn't test it. Do me a favor and go to KSEY's
webpage. There are 4 Shoutcast streams you can call up of the stations
output in low res audio. Cowboy music recorded in 1938 doesn't need
wifi...(c;] Let us know which of the 4 streams KSEY uses will play on
it, please. I wish I'd had more time to test it. Too many buyers
looking over my shoulder...(c;]

Thanks

Mine does .mp3 and .wmv. It's not a codec issue- it's seemingly a stream
format problem of some type. Some streams play fine with the phone's
native software, some don't- generally the ones that insist on playing
"inside" a browser page rather than launching a media player fail.

Yes and no- it's really no different than designing websites that display
correctly in all browsers, vs. sites that display correctly only in IE, or
Safari, or Firefox. If your radio station wants the widest possible
audience, it'll try and be generic as possible. They obviously offer the
steams to be heard, so why not try andinsure the major mobile platforms can
hear them, since it doesn't really cost them any more to do so.

(Note that I'm not really picking on KSET- they've obviously tried being as
platform agnostic as possible by offering four different streaming options,
and have tried harder than most sites to reach the largest variety of
listeners.)

Wrong attitude. Sounds like your sellphone friends need to MAKE THE PHONE
PLAY COMMON CODECS.

How arrogant it is to think it's the responsibility of the streamer
providing FREE media to pander to the damned sellphone users. That's
bullshit.

I've spent an hour with the owner on the phone when he was working his own
board. It's a really small little family-owned station he inherited from
his mother. They have an AM transmitter in Wichita, KS, he saved from
bankruptcy simulcasting the old country and cowboy songs. He's a helluva
nice guy who's living his boyhood dream in radio.

He streams what Shoutcast can stream. The streams don't come from the
station. The "server" is an old Pentium III his secretary used to type
letters on...(c;] KSEY runs at the bleeding edge of technology, obviously.
One stream goes out to Shoutcast for distribution.

Shoutcast doesn't pander to the sellphones, not the stations on it.

Or, for more details:

Are there *any* handheld devices which support full Flash yet? Not that
I'm aware of. Flash Lite, yes. But not full Flash.

A lot of websites redirect mobile browsers to their mobile website. You
can set the browser to ID itself is Firefox or IE to get around that.

Japanese cell phones do. You can also have Flash wallpapers.
