I don't know either, I like T'bird as an email client but gave up on it
as a newsreader for that reason along with other filter deficiencies.
I find I need a newsreader that allows scoring along with other
filtering to get rid of all the unwanted posts so I use Xnews.

If you consider changing look here for some that do allow scoring:

I believe there are others.
