W ll, on typical Verizon cellphones, the "GPS" relies on both satellites
and cell towers for position data, so Verizon has to be involved for the
GPS to function. Therefore, the revenue stream is as least justified since
the GPS is a network-dependent feature.
On newer smartphones, the GPS is a fully-functional satellite GPS, so
Verizon's "lockdown" is a lot harder to justify on those models,
particularly when savvy consumers notice the GPS ISN'T locked down on the
same model phone offered by different carriers!
