Post subject: USB data cable for US Nokia 6030 / Connect Nokia 6030 to PC
Archived from groups: alt>cellular>nokia (more info?)

Hello.

I just got a Nokia 6030 from Cingular here in the US and have been
trying to hook it up to my computer. According to both Nokia and
Cingular (who was probably told by Nokia) the phone has no official
cable connectors and that the only way to transfer stuff to it would be
through WAP.

I did some research on my own and came across a few websites that list
some unofficial cables. I also keep coming across contradicting posts.
Some say that you cannot connect it, others say that you can connect
it. And those who claim to have been successful have posted information
which is insufficient and terrible (I mean painfully terrible) to read.
Here's some links for your amusement:

Official Nokia site for the 6030:
http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/6030

Posts :
http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_6030-reviews-1086.php
http://www.mobile9.com/invboard/index.php?s=6c5f1a9fd437f487e8563c6e6f...51b&sho

Possible cables:
http://greattop.en.alibaba.com/product/50022291/50163398/Mobile_Phone_...Data_Ca
http://mobile.brando.com.hk/USBcable-N6030.php

If you look at the phone, it has what looked at first a 4 pin USB
connector. I tried the cable that I connect my digital camera to the PC
on the phone but it was too big- must be a mini USB. From my research,
I found out that the port is meant for data support services, usually
carried out by Nokia tech, but supposedly people have had luck
connecting it to the computer.

I am also convinced that the phone can be connected to the PC because
the 6030 is also supported by public software like MobiMB.

Another connection that is possible according to these posts is through
pins that exist on the back of the phone. You have to take the battery
off (and this is where it gets vague) some say the end of the cable
connects straight into the phone, others say it must be attached to the
battery and the whole assembly fits into the phone.

I don't think I have ever come across anything more confusing and
frustrating than finding instructions for connecting a phone to the
computer. I had a Motorola V220 which was a pain in the neck to connect
to the PC and sync with Motorola Mobile Tools. With the V220, I could
at least use a regular 4 pin USB.

Anyway, I would greatly appreciate any feedback from those who might
have had luck with this phone.

Thanks.

This is the correct sequence. Te battery must fit in special slot in
technological cable and the whole assembly fits into the battery slot.
The phone must be turned.

You can find complete technological cable connection instructions in
our forum topics:

This topic is dedicated to 6030 phone connection:

Hi,

Thank you for responding to my posting.

So from your links, it seems like the serial cable for the Nokia 1100
should work with the 6030 as well. Is it better to use that one or the
USB one? What are the pros and cons of using either?

Also, is there a difference between the European and American versions
of this phone when it comes to PC connectivity?

What cable would you recommend and is there any places inside the US
that would sell it?

Thank you again.

Hello!

On transport level they transfer the data at the same rate: 115200 bit/s .
If you are using Serial cable, then you should change IRQ ( Interrupt
Request ) for physical COM port, so it is not IRQ3 or IRQ4. In case of USB
cable you don't need to change IRQ's, but you should install virtual COM
port emulation drivers.
USB cables are usually based on ProLific PL-2303 chipset ( you can download
the drivers here: http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?ID=31 ) or
Texas Instruments chipset ( the drivers are available here:
http://focus.ti.com/docs/toolsw/folders/print/tusbwinvcp.html ). Anyhow, USB
cable's supplier must provide the drivers or chipset model number, this
cable is based on.

h> Also, is there a difference between the European and American

It looks, that there is no difference, but we cannot state this, as we
haven't evaluated American version of 6030.

h> What cable would you recommend and is there any places inside the US
h> that would sell it?

You can find such cable's over ebay. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend any
model, because this type of connection is unofficial and your phone's
warranty voids when you plug this cable to your phone.

Hi Maxim.

Thanks for your quick replies. I ordered the USB cable from
mobile.brando.com.hk and it comes with the drivers and everything. I
should receive it within 2 weeks. Will update this posting with my
progress.

Thanks again.

Hi huntagratsna

Just to let you know that, when you get the cable, don't use Oxygen's
product. Download the FREE PC Suite from Nokia & try using that first.
It's a smaller, faster piece of software than Oxygen's bloatware and
doesn't come with loads of useless 'features'.

Thanks for the heads up harleyglenn. I didn't think that PC Suite
supported the 6030 though. Do you know for sure?

No mate, I don't know for sure, but I do know that it will often pick
up phones that it allegedly won't support. As it's free there's no harm
in trying, you may get lucky. Try an older version rather than the
latest one though, the older one's are a little less picky about the
type of cable you use.

Failing that, if it doesn't work, try downloading Oxygen from one of
the P2P networks and get it free too. To be honest with you, for what
you want, it's really not worth the money. If they did the 'Lite'
version for free, it would be very different, but why buy when PC Suite
is free? There's also a number of us really fed up with their constant
spamming on this site. If their product was that good, they wouldn't
need to do that.

Anyway, best of luck.

Harleyglenn-

I was planning on giving the Suite a try anyway. I did notice in other
postings that Oxygen was indirectly but frequently mentioned, quite a
few times at the end of the message.

Even though I have to admit that the gentleman was helpful by
recommending a cable, you are right. One wouldn't need to broadcast
their software through public postings if the software quality spoke
for itself.

Thanks for the advice.

Well. Guess what? I just received my package today to find out that
those idiots sent me a cable for the Nokia 6060 instead. Grrrrr! Second
time this has happened to me when I order stuff from China.

This won't work with the 6030 will it? I have not torn the package so I
am going to send them an email and ask to be sent the right one.

Hiya. Not sure about the cable compatibility, I don't know the 6060
that well. Be best to email them, as you say. Failing that, check out
your local Nokia dealer/service centre, see what they say. If you have
anyone local who unlocks phones, they should be able to help too!

Well. I emailed the seller and he responded saying that the cable for
the 6060 is compatible with the 6030. This is funny because the USB
cable I got, I am assuming, plugs into this mini-USB port at the bottom
of the phone (haven't tried it yet). That's what I was looking for to
begin with but then it seemed like the connection at the back of the
battery was the one recommended (according to the Oxygen Manager guy).

I hope I will still be able to do the same though. The thing I find
annoying is that the cable I was expecting looks very little like the
one I just got. I mean the picture I looked at when I ordered the cable
showed me a cable with 3 pins sticking out of a plastic base and a USB
connector on the other. I am wondering if this guy sent this cable on
purpose. If so why would he advertise a different cable?

Hmmm...I am going to size up the cable by eye to see if it will fit,
and if it does it might work. I mean, now that I think about it, it is
a little odd to have to take the battery off and then stick the cable
in the back. Doesn't sound too practical.

Will give it a try later.

Thank you.

As per reports from our respective customers, this type of connection also
works. That plug, which looks similar to 'mini-USB' is directly connected
with the same contacts as the contacts under the battery. If you are using
USB cable, please, don't forget to install virtual COM port emulation
driver. Virtual COM port emulation driver creates new COM port in your
system, so you can use it in our program.

If you haven't got any CD with the cable, you can try these drivers:

http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?ID=31

Most of such thirdparty cables from China are based on PL-2303 chipset.

Post subject: And it works! [Login to view extended thread Info.]
Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

Hello harleyglenn.

It works! This is what I did:

1. Plugged the mini-USB cable (the USB end of it) into the computer. It
prompted me with the new hardware wizard. Said Install it
automatically. It found the USB cable driver. I didn't know you needed
a driver to use the cable though. The phone was not plugged in at this
point. So I've been wondering about that. The Oxygen guy keeps
mentioning chipsets but I am not quite sure what chipsets he is talking
about: phone or cable chipsets. Is there a chipset at the USB end of
the cable, is that why it is thicker? I didn't think cables had
chipsets. I didn't need to use the cd that came with the phone. I do
keep getting another add hardware wizard though everytime I startup. It
is a PCI connector according to the device manager. I try to search for
drivers on the cd but it doesn't find any. Any idea what this second
wizard is about?

2. Anyway, installed the cable and then installed MobiMB. Hadn't
restarted the machine so the phone wasn't being detected. Tried it a
couple more times. No luck. Next day though, with the machine
restarted, the phone was detected and I used Logo Manager Pro Suite
demo to browse ringtones, wallpapapers, themes etc. The demo would only
let me drop one file at a time but what do I care. My phone only has
3MB of memory anyway. One thing that I couldn't get to work was games.
I downloaded some torrent games and can't make them work. Each games
came as two files one of which was a .jar file. Dragged and dropped
them onto the games folder. They wouldn't show up on the phone though.
Any idea of how to make them work?

Ringtones and wallpapers were a piece of cake. The screen on the phone
would refresh immediately and before I knew everything would be
downloaded and ready to mess with.

Thanks and hope this will help somebody else out there.

Cheers.
