During a trip in the Rocky Mountains area (cities, highways, roads,
national/federal/state parks) I want to have internet available
through preferably UMTS.

What terminology is used in the US for UMTS? Is it called UMTS or HSPA
or something else?
Which providers do offer this service in the Rocky Mountains area?

Please provide some names/pointers to help me search further on this
subject.

There is very little mobile coverage in Rocky Mountain national park at
all, never mind UMTS!

AT&T, the only UMTS provider in the area calls it "3G"- you can find the
coveragemaps at www.att.com

I beieve there coverage is at the non-standard frequeof 850 and 1900-
you'll need a quad-band hone and probable be limited to GPRS.

Only AT&A/Cingular have HSPDA in the states on 850/1900mhz. Not compatible
with Europe's 2100 UMTS.
Coverage is only in selected cities at this stage.

Better to bring a phone cable and use your 56k modem by buying a prepaid
kit. Unless of course you find an unsecured wifi spot.

T-mobile won the bid for the 1700 and 2100 mhz frequencies for
UMTS/HSPDA at an FCC auction. I have no idea when they will be debuting
the service but I would guess that should be in a year or two, most
likely in the larger cities first.
