Post subject: Transferring iPhone Library to New Computer
Archived from groups: misc>phone>mobile>iphone, others (more info?)

Greetings,

I have a problem transferring all my synched iPhone material from my old
computer to the new one, which is a MacBookPro. To be honest, this is
becoming annoying.

I recently synched everything from my old computer, on which all my
material was, onto the iPhone. I then deauthorised the old computer and
connected the iPhone to the new computer.

But I just found that the new computer did not acknowledge anything that
was on the iPhone and transferred absolutely nothing that was on it.

Can anybody tell me, please, how to do this? Because I have been trying
for a while and I just can't get this to work.

Many, many thanks.

Your iPod or iPhone is a dead-end-road for music and video.
You can only put stuff on it from your computer, but never in the other
direction.
Well, at least that's Apple's intention.

Of course there are 3rd party apps which let you copy material *from* an
iPod/iPhone - but Apple says that's illegal.

Solution for you: Copy your stuff from your old computer to your new one
- directly, without using an iPhone/iPod.

I don't know that Apple has actually said such a thing at all, as it's
not illegal and may not even constitute copyright infringement. I do
know that their hands are tied on this issued because they have to keep
the music companies happy, and the possiblity that iPods could easily be
used as conduits to transfer music from one computer to another is
something these companies are _NOT_ happy with.

I've never understood this. Why not just limit transfers of purchased
content from the player to computers authorized on the same account as the
iPhone/iPod? And why block transfers of self-ripped content at all? It's
not like if someone really wants to illegally give ripped material to
someone else they couldn't just loan them the CD or use a thumb drive to
transfer the very same iles on the iPod. The limitation seems to
inconvenience legitimate users yet does virtually nothing to protect
content owners.

What was the old computer - a Mac with iTunes?
And do you still have it (including data)?

If so, your easiest method might be to transfer from there, using
Migration Assistant

if not: see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 (applies to material
purchased in the iTunes store, not eg from audio CD's).

See some more hints at:
http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&src=support_site.home&local
e=en_US&q=itunes%20iphone%20transfer%20computer

Other methods:
Use PhoneView http://www.ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/
or PodWorks http://www.scifihifi.com/podworks/

And if you didn't, you can still run Migration Assistant. It's quite good.

Actually, it does work that way for content purchased from the iTunes
Store.

I have an iPod whose content includes songs imported from the well over
1000 CDs I've obtained over the years. It would be A LOT easier for
someone to pirate this music directly from the iPod than it would be to
get from me any other way.

Not when you take people with collections like mine into account, and
bear in mind that legitimate users can transfer their entire iTunes
libraries between multiple computers they own.

That is true for the iPod but not the iPhone. With the iPhone you cannot transfer material from a
second computer to the phone, nor can you transfer from the phone to the computer.

When you connect an iPhone to a computer other than the primary one, it asks if you want to erase
the library and set the new computer as the sync computer. If you say Yes, it does in fact erase
everything on the phone and then sync with the new computer. If you say No, it leaves the phone
alone, but it will not allow you to transfer items from the computer to the phone. I discovered
this through direct experimentation.

I couldn't believe this was true when I first discovered it, and I had a number of discussions on
this group with people who couldn't believe it either. But eventually I called Apple iPhone support
and had two technicians tell me that it is correct: you cannot transfer material to the iPhone from
a computer other than the primary one.

If you are willing to leave the trodden path, use PhoneView.

Just follow this link. This will explain how to transfer all your data
from one computer to another.
