I have been trying to use the Apple Remote application on my iPhone but I
cannot get it to connect to the iTunes library.

The configuration is iTunes v 8.0.2 on a Mac Pro Running OS X 10.5.6. The
iPhone 3G has version 2.2 of the phone software. The Mac does not have
integral Wi-Fi but is on a Ethernet LAN with an Airport Extreme. The iPhone
works fine with the Airport access point in other ways. It can fetch AP
news, check email and synchronize with the Mac Pro through Wi-Fi.

But iTunes doesn't see the iPhone. I have the Remote app running and select
the Add Library function. Under iTunes, I do Preferences ->Devices. I do see
the iPhone listed under Device Backups, but not as a remote. If I tell it to
forget all remotes, it complains that no remotes are currently in use.

Does Remote work with an external WI-Fi access point?

Make sure your firewall isn't blocking incoming iTunes connections;
System Preferences : Security : Firewall must not be set to "Allow
only essential services".

I guess so.

Thanks, but I don't believe that the problem lies there. I have the software
firewall set to "Allow all incoming connections" because I use a dedicated
hardware firewall. Also, my iPhone can connect to my Mac through the Airport
Extreme for functions like synchronizing File Magnet and Splash ID.
